Brad
I'm fairly settled on buying a Landrover Discovery and my main decision is whether to go for petrol or diesel. I like the power of petrol but some people tell me that diesel is the way to go. I'd appreciate any advice that people could offer. Thanks

I looked into the same thing and this is what i found
Petrols aren't too good on fuel but are easier to come by. Diesels are great being diesels parts aren't too dear on them -there is cheaper. The turbo cuts in a bit late for my liking so a bit sluggish till then but is able to be changed so that it cuts in earlier but otherwise I say go the diesel for the cost of fuel these days.

Brad, which model? I can only speak for the TD5, of which
mine is the manual. I believe the auto is the best option. Petrol are thirsty. The diesel is an excellent motor. Around town it is quite brisk. Cruising is effortless; just set the cruise control and eats up hills without any drama. Towing is fine too, provided you don't plan on towing a 3 tonne yacht. If the standard TD5 doesn't have enough grunt you can have it chipped. You may find the Disco website a useful place to visit :

What do you intend to do with the car, will help judgement.

Thanks all for the responses. Sounds like diesel is the way to go so far. To answer a couple of the questions raised:
I'll be buying new. Good deals seem to be around but of course one must ask "Why?" - Never seem to see bonuses etc for Toyotas. Maybe they don't need to offer extra incentives.
What will I be using it for?
Well like many four wheel drives it'll spend most of its time on the hardtop. But it will be used off road. Load space is not crucial, neither is range between fills.

Brad,
I would be looking at at Td5 Diesel Discovery.
I have a diesel auto and am very happy with the way it performs on road and off road. The new ones offer so much more to the buyer but the most important thing is mechanically they are still the same with tried and proven bits.
It will do every thing that you want it to do and a bit better.
The advantage of the Disco is that it has more room go and have a look at the rear cargo area. You will see what I mean.
If you are contemplating a long trip every bit of space helps.
Cheers Geoff

Brad, I had a 300 Tdi Discovery Auto for 5 years and found it excellent in the sand and rough stuff. It was reliable, and the only thing that stuffed up was the heater core which was an expensive pain in the butt, as it's behind the dashboard, probably the same on the models you're looking at..
Now I've got a manual Defender Td5 which is more powerful for towing a 1.5 tonne van and is great in the dirt and sand.
The auto Td5 should be an excellent vehicle all round......... pity the Defender hasn't the same creature conforts, but I'm pretty satisfied with it.

It's got to be diesel every time. I have a TD5 Defender and love it. Lots of power, quite brisk in fact - especially for a diesel. Economy is good - 10.5l per 100kms.
The V8s are lovely to drive but are too thirsty.
Happy Landrovering!

I'm with Julian i drove them all v8 auto,td5 auto and td5 manual. The v8 drives very nice but the dreadful economy puts it out of the question.Just thought the td5 auto lacked a bit of oomph although all the experts claim the diesel auto the best. For me it was the diesel manual ,so smooth through the gears(thanks to anti shunt control)really boots along certainly not slow has all the creature comforts and some.Really like the engine braking of the manual as
well when off road. The land rover slogan as good on road as it is off is pretty accurate as it drives really
well on all terrain. If you didn't want to lash out on the newer series 3 discovery there could still be some stock around of the series 2 and could save big $.Yep td5 manual for me .If you are in Melb. go around the
test track at
melbourne landrover it simulates ice ,sand ,water crossings and a 38 degree
hill climb that is white knuckle stuff. They explain the many features for the many conditions. cheers mark

Petrols are great but when it comes to long distance driving the problem is where do you carry it. Diesel is the better because
1. it doesnt use as much fuel when in 4wd situations, ie
simpson desert.
2. It doesnt get as hot when travelling slowly
3. No cat converter to st the grass on fire
4.Buy an auto so there is no lag in the city at lights
5. Auto better in the deserts, can change gears with out loosing traction
