Hi there, Anyone replaced a timing belt on 2002 3ltr turbo diesel Hilux. Access is great and there's only the two pulleys plus the idler. However I am trying to figure out how to release the tension on the idler as it quite different from previous ones I've done. The idler pulley rotates on a cam and is tensioned by a compressed spring housed in a tubular casing sitting just below the pulley. Can anyone advise? Thanks Marcus

Hi.The centre bolt in the tensioner pulley is what locks it in position.Just loosen it off and lever the pulley away from the belt. Bob.

Hi Guys, Thanks for the tips. The complete job took about 2.5 hours including replacing the fan belts and resetting the dash light. The idler assembly has a small hole through the compression mechanism which allows you to lock into a fully compressed state with the use of a small rod (I used the shaft from a pop rivet). This makes installing the new belt pretty simple, once the new belt is in place you just pull the small shaft out of the hole and the tensioner takes up the slack. Thanks Marcus
