First time user, please be gentle... Hi all I have just suffered what appears to be, a common issue with my patrol 3 ltd patrol. Blow motor to value of damage of about $16,000. I have dealt with that issue but now looking for another vehicle. I am looking at a Jeep Commander 3 ltr diesel turbo. 2006 model. Can anyone give me constructive feedback on any issues that they may be aware of in relation to this vehicle

Kerrymac,

You would be better asking this question on the following site where you will get feedback from people who own them not from someone who doesn't own one and is likely to give you hearsay.www.ausjeepoffroad.com

I've got a Commander 2007 CRD. Towed our 20 ft Bushtracker van around the Gulf last July (with 7 people in the car!) including Lawn Hill, Kingfisher etc. Another 6 000 km trip down to Wilson's prom and back via both the Victorian and Kosciuszko high country in Jan 09.
Took a Podtrailer across the Simpson in Sep last year (08) towed by the Commander. Went great. Taking the BT on a 7 week trip around the Kimberley in July this year, including the Tanami and coming back via the Gary Junction road and the Sandover to the Isa.
Can't really fault the Commander so far, except that it's a pain getting accessories for it (bull bar, suspension upgrade etc).
Brilliant tow vehicle, great tranny, and power to weight as good as the 200 series Tojo.

I haven't run into anything of consequence yet. Issues such as the outside wing mirrors "vibrating" at high speed, and a few other minor matters were all fixed by Jeep without question.

There is no doubt their resale value as a percentage of purchase price falls faster than (say) the rice-eaters. However, I carefully looked into this at the time. Let's say you pay $90 K for a new Cruiser and after 3 years, it's worth 70% of new value. That means it's worth $63 K and you've "done" $27 K lost value.
The other choice is to buy a Commander (say) at $60 K and after 3 years it's worth 60% of new value. You think that your resale value is bad compared to the Tojo, but you've actually "done" $24 K compared to a loss of $27 K on the Tojo.
In other words, the Jeep loses value as a % of new faster than the Tojo but actually loses less value in real dollars, and at the end of the day, that's what counts.

PS: I've had several L/C wagons before, as well as two Patrol wagons, a L/R County V8 and Ford Explorer, and L/C Hilux. The L/C wagons are great vehicles, but just beware of the "hype" regarding resale values.

Thanks very much for the followup Bandicoot. What do you refer to as L/C. Is probably obvious but the grey matter have glow plugs that aren't glowing at the moment. I heard news tonight that Chrysler are heading to bankrapsy, have heard anything of this is if so what do you see as possible consequences.
