I have a 2004 Sahara Landcruiser on Duel Fuel. This is the third one I have had, all on LPG and I have a recent story to tell.
Have done about 70,000klm with LPG in this vehicle, Odometer is at 104,000.
Last week towed a van 600klm from Syd to Albury and the engine Blew Up. Cracked a ConRod and punched a hole in the side of
the block. $10,000 and a second hand engine later I am licking my wounds but realised something for all those who have GAS or are thinking of getting it.
When the LPG is installed, some of the enine management is bypassed. This means that there is apparently no control over the revs of the vehicle and so Toyota have blamed the problem on overrevving. (the car was 5 weeks out of extra care warrantee).
After reflecting on all the Klm's I have done, I remembered that when towing and on cruise control, when going uphill the engine revs very high and then the cruise control releases. I wonder if this is what they mean?
I have now disconneted the gas while the engine is still in warrantee and the behaviour of the engine under the same conditions is very different so perhaps Toyota have a case here.
What dissapoints me is the Gas installer does not mention this possibility when installing the system otherwise one could allow for this and react accordingly. Looking back you may say that I should have reacted to the high revs however it was not RedLining and I was under the impression that the Car was doing what it was supposed too since it was on cruise control.
Can anyone give
feedback on this? Toyota have said they have only seen this damage three times in landcruisers and all three had Gas Fitted.

G/Day
Does it say in the manual to do heavy towing with Cruise Control on? I allways thought it was a no no, maybe I could be corrected.
Cheers

I never really looked at that. As I said though the behaviour of the car on Petrol / Cruise Control / Towing is far different to when it is on Gas. I need to do some testing when Im not towing also on Crusie steep incline.

Dont bother with Gas and dont use Cruise Control! on hills it only sucks your juice because it cant drive the hills it only keeps the speed constant, ie, speed up a bit when going down
hill and roll over the
hill, not gear down and redline to make it to the top. I've got the same car with 140000 on the clock and after my first trip through the hills I'll never use cruise again, and now i get almost as good fuel economy as mates with a td(few mads added to improve)

Thanks for your replies but the main reaon for this thread was to advise others in case they come accross the same situation.
That is, if you concider running your LC on Gas carefull of the overrevving as if Toyota are right it will eventually destroy your engine.
Mine after only 100000klm although the car was always serviced.
