After a recent service at nissan dealer, I am more confused on which grade of oil should be in my nav. The manual says 5w-30 is preferable, my dealer has used 15w-40.

After reading the manual, for my D22,(when I had one), the manual is quiet specific, as to what specification of oil you can use.
my advice to you would be to stick to the guidelines.

Is your Nissan dealer prepared to sign off on this oil, so your warranty is not efected ?...

Have you challenged the dealer on it ?
and have you rang Nissan themselves and asked them to clarify ?

There should be a note (except for Europe) which applies for Oz.
Another part of the note, might say never use CG grade oil, or at least, from what I remember. The rest is up to you !
Cheers

I have a Patrol ZD30. My old 2003 model said 15W40 the newer 2005 book says 5W30.

On a recent rebuild of my motor I ran 15W40 for 600K then started making enquiries with Nissan dealers, oil distributors, etc and my query that 5W30 seemed just 'too thin' for operating in the Australian Tropics, that is the same spec for Europe Winter.

To cut a long story short, you will get a mixed bag of replies from these "experts" and also in this forum.

My next oil change I used Mobil1 5W50, travelled nearly 5000 km and noticed oil gauge sitting very high. Last oil change I used the proper 5W30 and the oil gauge now sits around 60psi (40 less).

I bought a 20 litre drum of Mobil1 5W30 from the distributor for $261. It's about TWICE the price of 15W40 because its a fully synthetic oil.

Expensive yes. But so is an engine rebuild!

They will have used 10W40 because that's all that many dealers keep in stock.

Mike - my local Nissan dealer uses 5W30 Shell helix ultra extra fully synthetic oil in my MY08 D40 T/D auto which meets the book requirements. Not cheap mind you at $144.40 each service. Just had the 10000km service done today.

I had call to phone Nissan Melbourne today about my 07 patrol 3l. Despite the book recommending 5W-30, Customer Services recommend 10W-40 Semi-synthetic. However, like you, Mike, my previous service receipt shows the dealer used 15W-40 - plain mineral, I bet.

Hi Graeme

I'm also on the oily merry-go-round. :-(

Having suffered the ZD30 fate I'm a bit paranoid about it happening again. At this stage I have everything IMHO to help monitor and prevent it exploding again.

On my initial rebuild, with a planned oil change at 1000km, I used Nulon 15W40 Diesel Oil. After reading other 'expert' posts convinced me to use Mobil1 5W50. That lasted the 5000km for my trip to NSW and back last week and I then went to what the log book says ... 5W30 (full synthetic Mobil1 I used).

Oil pressure dropped from 100psi to 60 psi.

Rang Nissan (Melb) today and was advised that ZD30 should be using 10W40 ACEA B3. (same as told to graham).

Rang Mobil 1800 and was told Mobil1 5W50 for NQ.

Here we go round the mulberry bush, the mulberry bush .....
