My son just showed me a 35W HID torch.
Unbelievable. They cost about $210 US
Fatter than a Maglite and a bit heavier, but as
bright as a HID driving light.
There are two sources that I know of.

depending on brand, 1-2hrs continous. apples and oranges IMO.
Can't compare ~100 lumens to
well over 1000 (3000 in this case)

The LED lights are good, but its like comparing a penny bunger to a nuclear warhead. This throws out very serious illumination.
I grew up spotlighting rabbits with my father. We used a 6V motorbike battery in a canvas bag over the shoulder and a hand held light. I thought that was
bright. And after two hours, and with a dozen rabbits on your belt, the battery started to get bloody heavy (at least for a ten year old). One of these HID lights would have been greatly appreciated.

Thanks for that Mike.
I note the battery life is about half of the 'torch' format lights, but at half the price looks very attractive.

Jaycar also do a REAL nice 1000 lumen LED torch. Catalogue number ST3371.
Burn time 4hrs (high), 9.5 hrs (low). Not bad for $190. They take D cell batteries (which obviously you can use rechargeable ones).

I saw something similar in a
camping shop, and was told it was being returned to the supplier as no one was buying any.
He demonstrated it for me, shining it to the other end of what is quite a large
shop. Unfortunately he forgot the wall mirrors at that end and the beam came right back at him.
It was the brightest torch I had ever seen; expensive though.
cheers

They will blind you if you look into them. Good if someone fronts up to you at night. They won't be able to see you to identify you later either lol. Want to get one but can't justify the dollars

Google "wolf eyes".
Our engineers use these, which are the same as the cops use. One version has a "strobe" function which is used to momentarily disorientate "offenders".
They have amazing illumination.

The $520 HID version looks mysteriously similar to the one I just bought from China.

Bob, I never looked that far up the price range. I'm looking in the hundred and something dollar range, and LED rather than HID as the LED suits what I want to use it for.
Good luck with the one from China :-)

Hmm I've been thinking of getting a companion / replacement for the big Mag Lite.
I'll be checking the Wolf Eyes out. I'm one of those people who would want to compare all the specs of several products before I'd be happy with my decision!
Prices aren't that insane considering the rechargeable mag lite was around $160odd. Considering we've had it since about 2003, it's a bit like spending $25 a year on batteries or something (ours is rechargeable).

The 2 gun torches at the moment if you can afford them are as follows:
Microfire K3500R Warrior 111 (Serious Quality HID Flashlight)
http://www.light-reviews.com/microfire_k3500r/
or for something with less power and based on LED is the the following:
Fenix TK40 (LED 630 Lumens Beast)
https://www.fenix-store.com/product_info.php?products_id=696
There is a company called Cree which are making some serious LED's at the moment, if you are serious about getting a nice torch then worth reading about them. The TK40 is based on 4 of the new Cree LED's. (www.cree.com)

I think its almost the identical torch and it almost certainly comes from the same factory in China.
