Does anyone know about the problems early GU's have with 5th gear? and the best economical way to fix this. Car has done 200,000 bought 2nd hand without the service history. Silly boy I know. The car is a 4.2 Turbo Diesel Wagon 1999 model.
I am in Perth metro.
Thanks in advance,
Tom

Yes, the early GU's had 5th gear problems. I cannot quote exactly but it is a generally known fact that they changed the gearbox from the GQ model, and that it spits 5th gear .

Cheers

Yes they do have a problem. You will get all the answers on how to fix it by going to the patrol4x4.com forum and doing a search (or ask the question again).

I remember some time back, on some advice from Roachie, I rang Val Davis at Nissan in Melbourne, and she got me to quote the chassis number to her, and from that , she could tell if we had a dodgy box or not. Ours is ok.!(so far)..

G'day Tom
You do not say if you car has actually lost 5th gear or you're just worried about it. At 200,000 km's I think it would have failed and been repaired before now if it was a suspect box. I've done a couple of these repairs in the past, basicly it's a problem with the splines on the main shaft not being hardened and shearing off. The box has to be completely stripped so the main shaft and the gear replaced along with all the bearings and seals etc....

G'day Jon,

Mine eventually let go at 280,000km. I drove my avoiding 5th gear as I knew of the problem early on but this still didn't help me, I should have just jammed it in 5th and tried to screw it up while the vehicle was still under warranty, as usual Nissan were no help with these k's. As I recall the spline did not go right through 5th gear and excess force was generated on the spline that was in contact with 5th gear. As you said, replace main shaft/5th gear and bearings but also look into fitting an older GQ 5th gear spacer as opposed to GU 5th gear spacer. The older spacer fits fine but has a pair of moon shaped cut-outs allowing oil to penetrate the main shaft where the GU spacer does not, I am sure this is not essential but to my reckoning it seems beneficial so I did it this way during the rebuild.

Tom, for 5G I had a crawler gear installed in my transfer case at the same time as the rebuild so whoever is quoting 5G for box rebuild alone has their hand on it. (hang on I see you are in WA, maybe in a mining town this would be the price??? my uncle had his rebuilt in Norseman for 3G also a few years back so hope this helps in pricing)

Regards, Trevor.

The GU gearbox is very strong. There was however a mistake in the manufacture of gearboxes for the early GUs models.

The fifth gear spline was too short. A recall was sent out but unfortunately not all owners took advantage of this.

It is doubtful that Nissan would now honour the warranty on the problem. Try ringing Nissan Customer Service in Melbourne.

What you need to do is get a new 5th gear spline fitted. I don't know the cost but it wouldn't be cheap.

You can drive the vehicle as long as you don't put it in 5th gear.

Nope,Never was any recall .They just waited and hoped all the bad boxes reached a date where they could say "tuff, it's too old."
Mine reached 2006 (2000) model before it went.

Thanks for that info. I had been informed my a Nissan Mechanic that there had been a recall. Vehicle manufactures have done that sort of thing in the past.

The worst example I know of is the Ford Pinto. It had a fault that Ford knew would result in the loss of life but they decided not to do a recall.

Thank you all for your help. I've been quoted around $5000 for a repair with genuine parts,$3000 plus /minus for nongenuine parts and have located a 2nd hand box off a 2004 4.2TD fitted for $2800 I'm thinking of going for the used box. Have not had a chance to check with Nissan in Melb. but will in the Morning.
Thanks again

Your main spline is a fine thread where it should be a course thread , I know a mechanic in Adelaide that repaired many of these in the past.
You could ring him for advise
