everyone is an 'expert' on tyres!

My advice (non brand specific!) is to look for a non agressive All Terrain tyre (8 or 10 ply). Probably 8 ply would be suitable and give a bit softer ride on the black top. Being in Perth you will probably be doing most of your off road driving in sand rather than rocky stuff like the flinders rangers anyway so 8 ply would be fine.

This way you are getting tougher tyres that you can trust off road and just enjoy the drive and won't have noisy tyres back on the road around town.

Cooper ST's for example are classed as an AT tyre BUT have quite an agressive tread so I wouldn't go down that path. Any place selling tyres will have a good range.

Maybe the Pirelli Scorpoin? Only mention this one because it won an AT tyre test in one of the magazine about 12 months ago.

Happy shopping but don't get too carried away with buying too aggressive. You will regret it back on the black top where you will spend most of your time.

Cheers,

I just fitted the Pirelli Scorpion ATR's on my Hilux (17" Wheels) and they replaced Cooper Discoverer ATR's which had completed around 95,000km's however were an aweful tire on wet bitumen (IMHO).

Whilst I haven't gone off road yet the Pirelli's in my opinion have dramatically changed the Lux for the better. They are very quiet on road, awesome grip on dry and wet surfaces. I was guided by the good reviews I had read about these tires and I'm glad I made the change.

What was also surprising was the price, I sourced 265x65x17 Scorpion ATR's for $300 each fitted. That is very good value based on the prices I received for the Coopers and BF Goodrich All terrains etc. The tires have identical load and speed ratings to the Cooper ATR's I replaced.

One experience of many tire owners..!

I agree with what Gossy said about choosing a tyre for Perth conditions.
Im using the B/stone 694 A/T and have found them very good in sand, equal or better to my old BFG A/T

The reviews being talked about had the Scorpion as the best all rounder .
The B/Stone were 3rd but better in the sand.
They are quiet and give the old landcruiser some manners
