As far as I know you cannot go from Palmerville to Maytown due to issues with a property owner fencing off a gazetted rd .

Yes. It is not a bad drive if you turn off at Gamboola crossing the Mitchell river, head up to Strathleven crossing the Palmer river, you pass King Junction Station and you hit the Fairlight to Kimba Road. Turn right out to the PDR at Fairlight. If you are adventurous you can turn left and head pass Killarney on a bush track and come out at Artemis. All good drives. Cheers Tony

Yes - sorry I saw that mistake but I figured you would work it out :-) It has been a good wet. I work for the right Shire to ask the question, but down the other end :-). Best to ring the Mareeba Office of the Tablelands Regional Council. They have work crews out that way who would have reported on the crossings.

Best to ring King Junction re the Palmer. They are always in a rush to get their cattle out after the wet, so Cook Shire is usually down there as soon as you can get across. The works department of Cook Shire may know.

Check that link I supplied above - they should have covered that road in their report. Cheers tony

I have been making noises about this for some time to the Cook Shire Council. Everyone please contact the council on the above links, and let them know you want the road opened.

This was an issue when I started work for Cook Shire back in 1998! I used to supervise the crew that graded the road from Fairlight to Palmerville Station across the river to the Cook Shire Boundary. There were locked gates and many issues way back then.

I also notice that there is court proceedings in relation to access by miners to sites on this land the court ruled that they were allowed access but he still refuses.

I agree this needs to be sorted. It looks like they want the land to be brought and added to the Palmer river Gold Reserve. Cook Shire was going to purchase the land the current road is on - why it has no happened??? I would say the $ are a sticking point.

It must be getting close to a solution its well over ten years of utter poo! Cheers Tony

No problem with the Old Coach Road, except it is a difficult trip. Laura to Maytown and then Maytown back out to the Mulligan Highway will take about 12 hrs and it is around only 140k. Do not turn Right at Maytown and try to go through Palmerville Station. If you can, read my Blog. Cheers TONY
