I have had two mechanics give me conflicting info
Does the Nissan GU patrol diesel have a replaceable timing belt or does it have a chain. One says chain which does not need replacing. other says belt which should be changed every 100 ,000K
Thanks

Daz,
My GQ had a chain, and with 160,000 trouble free k's under its wheels I can confidently say the GU is the same.
My advice to you is to find a mechanic you can trust. The guy who wants to dhange the belt is either ignorant or having a lend of you. Either way you don't want to let him anywhere near your car or your cheque book with a spanner.

The GQ has gears, and as they are the same motor in the GU, will be the same. Checked the work
shop manual. Col

The 2.8l GU Timing belt.
The 3.0l GU Timing chain.
The 4.2l tdGu Timing gears.
I do not which one you have, the above is correct.
All the best.

I just had a look in the
Gregory's Manual - TD42 has GEARS.
When I rebuilt my ZD30 it had a CHAIN and gears.

Thanks everyone.
The First mechanic I booked the vehicle to be serviced with told me he was Nissan trained & that it was a belt. ( & he would look after & service the vehicle) When I took it there he was away & one of the
young fellows wanted to service it. Off I went looking for reliability.
Then took it to a local RAA approved mechanic who said "No belt do not touch". He has a patrol of his own.
Thanks for your info.
It gives me faith in the mechanic I have chosen.

The TD42 definitely has gears and not a belt or chain. I had the timing cover off
mine a few months back to fix an oil leak. The book also says so

Just out of curiosity, are timing gears as close to "maintenance free" as you can get for this part of a motor?

only if they are metal gears.
holdens were notorius for using some sort of plastic or cardboard for there timing gears which were garanteed to leave you stranded
