Ok,

Need a work vehicle (50/50 use) - have a Toyota diesel 60s series Sahara which I need to sell - gearbox only works in 1 and 2 gear - no other gears, need new aircon but apart from that in very good condition.

Don't want to spend too big - up to $20K - so probably something from 1995 on.

Whats recommended, 80series, 100 series in the Toyota or a Nissan Patrol (I am not familiar with these).

Whats the best models in the above - are some years better than others. Is diesel the way to go or should I go for a petrol/gas combination - vehicle will be majority city use and needs to pull a 1 tonne load easily.

Should I sell my current beast privately or trade-in? Not sure what I would get for it - it is just about out of reg but would cost about $5K to fix up and the engine has never had the regular $5 K oil change on it and has done about 450000Kms.

Thanks for your help.

I would get a 80 or a 100 diesel and put an aftermarket turbo on.

Any particular year you recommend in the 80 or 100. Do the diesels not come with standard turbo. Could I use the turbo from my 60 series.

The turbo models in the 80 and 100 are way overpriced on the used market.
Year is not important if it has been looked after.
You maybe able to use the old turbo if you can make it fit.
As the non turbo engines were not really designed for a turbo, you need to fit a EGT gauge and keep the temp done by adjusting your foot

Huskidog,

If you are looking at majority of city use, with no extended long outback touring trips and only towing a 1 tonne trailer, I would be looking at a petrol 80 series post 1995.

Suspension is great, they go like stink, plenty for sale, and you can get a really good one for your price range. Chuck it on gas as they do use a bit of fuel but you would have something that goes extremely well.

100 series weak point is it is hard to find a good one without IFS and hasn't been bush.

Example purchase; marlin blue 80, petrol, old man, towed van up to exmouth for 18 years. 193km on the clock, Manual, $12,000

Or have a chat to Bob from KAOS, apparently Landies are really good and they tow cruisers really well.

Gday
Why not just do the gearbox and clutch on the vehicle that you already have.
