Hi i am looking to travel the birdsville track and we are looking at hiring a 4wd campervan. Does anyone know were we are able to find an AUTOMATIC 4wd campervan to hire in Adelaide? My partnet can only drive automatic and i dont fancy driving the entire trip. Thanks!

Matt,

did you try the campervan websites? I'm sure if you visted Apollo, Britz or the likes, they'd give you the specs of all the various vans. It's a great drive. Enjoy it.

Cheers Mick

Gday Mick,

Yeah i tried all the major websites like apollo, bitrz, backpackers, maui etc but they all seemed to have manual 4wd campers. Im sure there are automatic 4x4 campervans somewhere, just no idea where to find them. Thanks anyway mate.

Give the main hire guys a ring anyway, im sure they would have autos even if not advertised.. a lot of europeans drive them out here and i bet some have never seen a manual gearbox...Michael

I think you will find manuals are more common in Europe than here in OZ

I think you'll find the majority of hire 4wd campers are Troopy's, as such automatic isn't even an option.

It may be easier to teach your partner to drive a manual.

Nothing better to learn in than a hire car.....
Will only take an hour or two and she will be fine...go for it!
The "track" is a 2 lane formed road anyway, so you won't need the 4WD feature unless you explore a bit. The Troopy campers are great, you'll love it.
Enjoy....
