I've been searching forums to research new tyres for my GQ, but it's not easy finding comments that address my needs. I want a tyre that's good on bitumin (dry & wet) and strong enough for the annual trip onto bush or desert track (eg.
Oodnadatta). I don't expect the tyre to be good on genuine 'offroad' surfaces, so no need for an MT. On my budget I'm considering:
Maxxis 751 - $174
Bridgestone 693 (Aussie made) - $200
Goodyear ATR - $209
Pirelli Scorpions - $229
Bridgestone 694 - $240
Goodyear Silent Armour - $255
Your comments please? Cheers. Rob.

We have lots of experience with the two Bridgestone products having used them on our vehicles for the last eight years or so and over 200,000 km off bitumen.
The 693 is excellent as an all rounder but I suggest you take a very close look at the 694 in either AT or LT load rating. The final choice depends on how much you use your 4WD, for example is it your daily driver and if you travel very heavily loaded and at speed.
Having just moved from the AT to the 694LT on our 120 Prado about the only thing I can say is you can't notice the difference even though they weigh an extra 4 kg per tyre.
Overall not a bad tyre amongst your list although user experience will provide different
feedback based on experiences
Also suggest you look at the Kumho and Toyo tyres as they also offer some very good choices

G'day outbackogre,
On my Hilux ive been using the Bridgestone A/T's 31x10.5x15 for 15 years and only had 1
puncture, but that tyre was almost bald.
I will use no other tyre till these are no longer available. Like you, most of my driving is on road. With my style of driving they offer good braking in the dry, good gravel road grip and the wet weather road grip is good aswell if you leave enough room between you and the bloke in front.
I NEVER deflate the tyres when on gravel roads. Normal road pressures 36-38 psi road pressure unless im going onto a beach then ill deflate them.
I know the GQ are a bit heavier than a hilux
Also the tyre wear is excellent. for the last 15 years ive been getting 130,000km average from a set i do run them till they wont pass rego.
Cheers

Hi there. Just one personal perspective: I have moved from HT (Highway Tread) to AT, and, at the same time, went to LT rating tyres. I can't be sure, but I suspect the vastly improved puncture/blow out performance has more to do with going to LT construction than going to AT tread. I, like you, don't really use the vehicle much off road, but the damage done to passenger construction tyres on roads with significant stone (gibber,
rock etc.) compared to LT construction seems to be a big factor.
I'm almost scared to say, but I run Coopers. But don't hold that against me!

Check out Kumho KL78, we have had a good run out of these, and they are
well behaved on bituminas
well. Price should be $200 or less because of the favourable exchange rate with korea.
Cheers Pete
