Just got my V8 vdj79 ute back from Toyota. Last week I had a 40,000 km service and told them I was sick of the precombustion knock and really thought they should do something about it. I was ready to start sending letters of to Toyota in Japan.
They said they were now testing each injector and came up with my No 7 injector was way off the mark. So in goes a new one. (warranty) Great. Only driven around today but already sounds better. Mostly it was really noisy in the mornings like I had dropped a valve into a piston until it warmed up. Then just a general rattle when accelerating.
Pretty good service from Mandurah Toyota. I think they are trying pretty hard to keep the business. I welcome other comments.
Next they phoned me and have an answer for the excessive oil use. Up to 1.3 litres per 10,000 km. While they say it is tolerable it is still a lot. Toyota have come up with an answer. They believe the turbo scavenging pump has an ill fitting lid and Toyota have brought out a new one which will be fitted next week.
So I am pretty happy these issues seem to be getting fixed. Other than these two items I am very happy with the ute. So much power is the biggest difference.
Places my old turbo 6 Landcruiser ute would need low range 2 gear to get up this one goes up in high range. In fact I have rarely had to put it into low range even for some damn difficult boggy beach work fully loaded.

Interesting comments.....I have the knock when cold but it dissappears when warm and hasnt bothered me to date.
As for the oil consumption
mine never has burnt oil but I am
well aware of
well documented cases that do.
Is there a recall on that scavenging pump?...
In fact I have never been notified of any recalls (purchased Feb 08) have you had any recall noticies?
Cheers

Hi Bungarra
At $900 per injector I don't think toyota is doing a recall. The other thing is they said originally is it was not damaging my motor. I would wonder at the noise it was making. Now it is quiet - much quieter than my old turbo diesel 6.
Unless you are having a problem with excessive oil loss I doubt they will offer the repair. No-one has specifically said anything - but I am just supposing these things.
I purchased my in Feb 08 too. My knocked started at about 12,000 km. My oil consumption was noticeable before 20,000 km when the oil light came on for low oil. Toyota have been monitoring my oil consumption.
I will have the true taste
test tomorrow morning when it is cold start.

I forgot - I did get a recall to reflash the computer - something to do with stalling at low revs - something that did not happen to me. The toyota guys were hoping it would also fix the precombustion knock but it didn't.

Thanks for that update.
the reason for my asking is that last week at my 20k service they told me about that recall and the computer update and the reason
my concern was that I never received the recall notice and I was therefore a little concerned that I may have missed any other recall notices....as a
point of interest mine never had the stalling issue either
cheers

The procedure is for a dealer to carry out a oil consumption
test every 1000 klms for 3000 klms & if the results equate to more than 1L per 8000 klms replace the gaskets on the scavenger pump flanges with modified ones
The cause of excess oil consumption on the 7# series V8'S is a different one to the cause on the 200 series but the
test procedure is the same to determine if the usage is acceptable or excessive & if a repair is needed

Well this was the first morning after having No7 injector changed by toyota. Great. Just Great. It was a cold morning with mist everywhere and I was towing the work trailer - normally this would mean I would have to turn the radio right up with the rattle from the motor. Nothing. Had to turn the radio off just to listen to the motor. It hummed like a V8. Got even quieter after it warmed up.
Very happy camper.

Just clocked up 48,000km on
mine. On cold mornings you would swear that there was someone in there with a hammer This started at about 5,000km and after a lot of back and forward to Toyota they admitted that there was a problem. They kept the ute for a week while they sorted it out and when I got it back it was just perfect. By 20,000km the rattle was back and is still there. Toyota tells me not to worry about it as it is normal. It has had 20k 25k 30k 35k and 40k
services done. All by Toyota service depots. The all tell me the same thing. Live with it......Hardly a drop of oil used in its life.... Apart from the rattle I could not fault it.
