Its winter so it may be colder and maybe the tappets need adjusting

Phil,

My 06 does the same, but has done from new. Disappears after a couple of minutes, and is most evident at 1400 rpm.

Have seen posts on this before, had the impression it was pretty universal in the D4D. The dealer gave the impression it was normal, something to do with injector programming for cold running and emissions i think.

I'm more concerned now, as yours has not done it from new - why does mine?

Check out thread 69513 - another example of cold engine excessive rattle caused by an injector problem ( a V8 I know, but would think the technology similar).

I will revisit the issue before warranty expiry...

Given the popularity of this vehicle it would be good to get a few more responses to see if this is normal - if so why is it just showing up with yours at 85k?

I'm reluctant to have the dealer's workers tinker with my complex machine if the problem is one of a minor nature.

Regards, John.

Our work Hilux hit 170k earlier in the week (05 model) and it has sounded like that for well over 120k, i thought it was going to go bang when it was cold but it hasnt. they all do that once they loosen up a bit( the other 5 hiluxes all sound the same) when they were new and tight it was not noticeable.

Have the glow plugs been checked or changed at all,if they are faulty or getting a little tired this can cause the rattle you are talking about.

What it is is poor combustion when its cold so it develops a diesel knock until there is sufficient cylinder temp, and the glow plugs help this happen quicker.
