Last weekend I was talking to Robin about his Maxxis Big Horns, and made a couple of phone calls comparing the price of this tyre to Cooper STT’s (265/70R17).

The Maxxis were $280, whilst the STTs are $405. This is a difference of $500 for a set of four.

I’m told the maxis won’t scrub the inner guard on the Prado. Is this true?

Second question. Will a larger diameter tyre (Cooper ST) fit on the rear door of the Prado without a spacer? I’m pretty sure it won’t, but would like to hear from others.

Regards

I run MT ATZs (265 70R17). I found that the spare wheel carrier would take the spare, but the tyre was hard up against the rear door and would probably wear the paint away.

I bought a spacer and bolts from a company called Shaping Solutions at Wollongong. All done by mail order, and pretty painless, although they did send me the right size bolts but the wrong thread. There are other companies that make these spacers, and other solutions ranging from washers on the wheel studs to stealing the wife's breadboard!

Come down to the workshop and we can make a spacer for you , in fact you can turn one up on the lath and drill the holes as well.

That’s a very kind offer, and I appreciate it. Let me know your business contact details via MM.

As you know I’m running Cooper AT/s around town, but have four ST’s in the garage. One is brand new, but the others have had a rough time and ready for spares.

Just ring 9580 4853 and I will answer.
I only have nylon 6 to do the job, if you want aluminium, pick up a piece on the way through.
