A mate of
mine was in a 4 x4 a couple of weeks ago and the owner used his set?? to conect up his Mobile Phone to ring home.
He was in the the top of the
King River (Vic) area at the time.
What type of set did he have. Are they expensive? Would they work at say Innaminka or
Lawn Hill? Are they like a Satelite Phone?
Thanks
Tony F

I think it could work on any 2 way radio but it has to have a network and a base with other radios that can recognise the selcall burst.
Its an updated version of the old radio telephone set up.
VKS737 HF tel is charged at $13 a month inc 10 mins of freecalls or $1.30 a min
You can send faxes as welll
Top of the range HF transceivers are around $4k but you can pick up older used units with selcall for a few hundred but you cant add new channels.
I think others can still listen in on your calls

There are 2 ways to achieve suck a feat.
1.
HF radio with an interconnect on the base end ie. Radtel
2. Satellite phone.
Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but in the end neither is cheap. Search the archives for more information.

Both set ups can easily connect with the areas that you mentioned.

Thanks for that. With my lack of knowledge in this field i would be best leave it to the Radio buffs. The easiest way for me to go would be to just hire a Sat Phone for the short time i am away. My planned trip is not that remote and reading the
forum about these areas it seems just wait awahile if you have trouble. Seems like you are bound to see someone whithin a few hours.
Thanks again Tony F
