Its a great spot when its not a long weekend or school holidays thats when the trail bikers get out and about. At this time of the year, because its a tad chilly, it should be really quite you should be able to camp really close to the dam.

If you like fossicking around there are still remnants of the old town.

We were there earlier this year, after the school holidays..
Nice spot, if dam camping is full there is a big open area just before the dam. It is about a 5 minute walk from there to the dam.
Depends when you are there March flies could be annoying.

Few more questions, re facilities, the 'free camping' mentions fireplaces ....is there wood available and do we need to be self sufficient re the rest??
thanks

It's a "bring your own - everything" kind of place. Zero facilities from memory.

Brian, it is best to take everything. If space in the vehicle is a problem, there is wood there if you feel like scrounging for it. Just dont take the hollow stuff things live in there.
From memory there are no actual fire places you should see where people have lit fires.
The place is /was remarkably clean so please dont forget your spade. You already know that anyway. I did once, my excuse was "I have CRAFT these days"

Tony

Nearly forgot, if you camp in the large area, and you go down into the gully keep a good lookout for wrigleys. Saw a couple when we were there!
