Howdy all, could anyone recommend a place to stay in
Meekatharra. Travelling from
Broome to
Perth so wanna make Meeka the half way point. Will only be over night, but would like to know out of the 3
places to stay there, which is the quitest and nicest? They arent cheap i heard so dont wanna be paying good dollars for a crap sleep. Drove through there last year very early in the morning and for some reason i didnt like the place at all. I think Kevin Bloody
Wilson might have given me the wrong impression with a certain song of his, i hope so.

Hi Kroozer
About 50 or 60 km south of Kumerina you will find the upper reaches of the
Murchison river. There is a lovely spot on the north west side that I have stopped at. Usually there is permanent water there and even fish - small perch? that are hungry as ever. It is stlll about 190km to
Meekatharra from that spot.
If you were leaving
Broome and hoped to get that far in one day about 1200km this might be as far as you want to drive as it will be getting on dark and the roos are shocking around this stage at night - never mind the thought of wondering beef burgers. A bit further than I like to push myself in a day. It is about 650km from
Port Hedland if you stopped over there as
well, so probably a good stop at the river.

Hi Duane
Just by chance another
forum on page 2 just now (
Pilbara trip questions 69852) has also suggested that same rest spot to someone else. It is the Gascoyne and not the Murchison. I am sorry I do not have the GPS but it is around 25,12,19S & 119,20,17E.

Kroozer,
ROFLMFAO, me thinks you haven't stayed in Meeka previously :-))
As Bundy has said....
Ask yourself why Kevin Bloody
Wilson gave you that impression
wonder why he did write the song, where did he get the thought from ?
I worked there on contract for 3 months, you may get lucky and have a great night - but you probably won't.
Stay
well out of town and you will stay asleep with-out worrying about noises during the night, the Hospital there was not open 24/7 so remember that too.

I have stayed in many
places without drama including
places like
Halls Creek, Fitzroy, but for some reason Meeka sends a shiver down my spine.
Cue sounds like a better option.

G'day Kroozer
Have stayed at the Auski 3 times over the last 6 years. Always neat/clean. Reas price for an outback motel. No probs with noise or any other issues.
However, Meeka is really only a place on the way to somewhere else (altho there is a nice nature walk with great
views at the west of the town).
Kumarina is OK too with good meals on site. Auski meals would be pricier.
Camping options are good on the road as per above posts. Really depends on what you want for the night; quick and easy and a shower etc or a
camp when you're not really in the area you want to be camping in.
Cheers.

Why not cut across from sandfire roadhouse 300km sth
Broome through the boreline road through
Marble Bar and
Nullagine and on to
Newman. Would cut about 300km off your trip and save between 1.5-2 hours enabling you to push on the extra 140km to
cue. It would mean about 400km of good gravel (about 80-90km/hr reasonably comfortably).
If you think of stopping before Meeka,
Capricorn roadhouse just south of
Newman is another option that has always been Ok in the dongas. Haven't been here for a couple of years so don't know what it's like now but someone else would know.
Sorry doesn't
answer question on Meeka but just throwing about other ideas.
Cheers Matt.

Ahhh
Meekatharra. Spent a week there one afternoon. Stayed the night at the Royal Mail Hotel in the dongas out the back. There was a corroboree being held on the other side of the fence (about 10 feet from my window).
After the corroboree there were a couple of people fornicating under my window (on the outside thankfully).
Fights, sirens, swearing and screams all night. Didn't sleep a wink all night. The car was in a compound, which I've heard is not there anymore. Since then I have always spent my best nights in
Meekatharra at
Cue.
Good luck Kroozer, you'll need it.
