UHF Radio Purchase - Any recommendations?

Hi All
We are in the market for a UHF radio to pop into our Triton. Just wondering if there is any recommendations on what or what not to buy. I have heard there are units that have all the controls on the handpiece and the main unit is installed behind the dash somewhere which my other half seems interested in.
Any recommendations would be great.
Thanks
Tars

I bought a GME TX3440 UHF radio for my Prado. All similar sized UHF radios have similar performance. I liked the TX3440 because it had the controls on the mike and the main unit is tucked away out of the road under the dash. Also its designed and built in Oz. So designed for our conditions and backup (I havnt needed it yet) should be easy to obtain. Oh, and you need a really robust matching antenna firmly bolted on. The fibreglass rod I had unscrewed itself and fell off (my wife saw it go and "thought it was a stick" well, yes, but they dont grow on trees). The stainless wire I bought to replace it failed through metal fatigue induced by vibrations on rough roads. Happy with the GME.

Hi Tars,
Like Mel above,we went for the GME 100% Australian made, 3 Years Warranty TX3440. Great unit and you can mount the main head unit anywhere inside the vehicle. All the controls are on the microphone and easy to use. Buy Australian and keep locals employed. Here is ours in our Prado

Cheers

Stephen

I bought a new GME 3420, a remote head unit,, My decision was made on a post a few weeks back, mainly being Aussie made (thats the least we can do if the product is good) and some say the GME is clearer to the receiving radio.. Anyway fit perfectly in the Patrol... Michael

GME is great value for money and their website will show you the various model configs - Prestige Comunications (on - line retailer) will probably have the best prices.

Hi Tars
I have mounted a GME 3400 in my Triton with the main unit on left hand side fire wall, it is out of the way and speaker is in the open where you can hear it. The remove head is placed on outside of parcel box under streering column and is at your finger tips and easy to see.
Good Luck Paintar

as mentioned just above, if you are sold on a mic with the controls, there is a big advantage with eth IC 440. Firstly it's an ICOM, so therefore better ;-) secondly teh ability to stick the main unit anywhere is somewhat mitigated if you can't hear the speaker. With the ICOM, the speaker is on the mic, so therefore not hidden away.

If you aren't neccesarily chasing the remote option, then get the IC400, coz it's an ICOM...

seriously though I have Icom in the P7 Patrol, a GME in the Family Jeep and a new remote uniden in the 'other' work Rodeo, and they are all very good. (but the ICOM is better).

Don't let your radio down by poor choice in aerials though. I have tried (and killed) a few and firmly believe that he RFI cd900, is an awesome option, and certainly the best that I have used.

cheers, Dave

Bit of De Ja Vu Dave ,lmao...I also agree with the RFI CD 900 as you can also use the 4db Ariel as well, you can buy in a pack with both as i use..

Another thing to not overlook is the Icom 41s Handheld using an external aerial,Dont let anyone tell you its not as good (reception wise) as an incar unit..There is no diff both 5watts but its portable.I use two of these in conjuction with one another. But if you have a convoy you can unscrew from bnc connector (external aerial) in seconds and move about with radio..

Cheers
