Is this how they normally respond to an emergency
beacon? by ringing around and trying to find a vehicle that will drive out?

If you are in a bad way out there the EPIRB just helps them find the body's
how ever long it took you to get there it will take them..

a bit like
seat belts in an Aeroplane when it crashes they only have to look for the seats.

12 - 14 hours from
Birdsville to
Poeppel Corner? By camel I presume.

Hi
If it was by camel, it would take
well over a week. The 12-14 hours is quick if you know the conditions out there. It does not look far on a piece of paper, but completely different out there in the flesh.
Cheers

Hoden 4th - this man was particularly lucky. Under normal conditions it would take the ambulance (very rough troop carrier) at least 12 - 14 hours to reach Poepples Corner. As he has 'suspect spinal injuries' it would be a very much slower trip back and almost impossible not to possibly do further damage.
Last year the bike riders broke mostly shoulders. Notice the age of this fellow - 45 - very typical age of motor bikers in the Simpson. Another thing to notice is once you get past a certain age you don't repair as quickly as you once did!
Once back in town - always provided he could be brought back in - then stabilised at the Clinic - the RFDS can fly in and collect. Very big operation to carry this out by local people.
