Hi all,
My son just rang to say an employee of his has filled their work vehicle, a Ford 2.5ltr Turbo Diesel with Unleaded and has driven it until it stopped.
I told him to take it to a diesel mechanic and get it cleaned out.
And that it was possibly stuffed.
What damage do you think may have happened?

If it's the old 2.5 TD and it didn't go bang and just stopped,I wouldn't think much has gone wrong with it, purge ALL the petrol out and see.
If it has the new CRD motor in it, that may be a different story, the flashy Euro TD's MUST go to dealer's and expect to pay $$$, have no idea with the Ford/Mazda and Is difficult to give an accurate prognosis with your description.

Unfortunately the chances are that the engine stopped when the injector pump ran out of lubrication from the incorrect fuel.
If it is a common rail engine it will be a very expensive repair. We have had to supply parts for repairs of this nature. Big long list!!

Its not always doom & gloom, the better half, half filled the tank on our 2001 Diesel Prado one day with ULP...
She then drove it to McDonalds driv thru where it then failed to respond to throttle input....it was still idling but that was it.
Not that the Prado engine is run by computer & even the throttle is fly-by-wire. It must have known there was sonething wrong & wouldn't allow the rpm to increase...
We got it towed, drained & all was
well again...that was 2 years ago now & at least 50,000km...
Cheers, I hope it works out OK.

Drove it
home, drained tank in morning, car is still runnin fine 100k klms + later.
