From the caravan forum http://tinyurl.com/nc8xo3 about Thetford fridges that dont meet Australian Food Storage standards. terrible they can sell stuff that could kill your family from food poisoning

"The Thetford fridges now been sold in Australia are not Tropical rated to the Euro standard for the cabinet, and to pass the AGA (Australian Gas Association) certification only have to maintain a 7°C cabinet temperature at 38°C. Thetford are saying their fridges are tropical rated, but it is only the electrics that are tropical rated at 38°C by the AGA and has nothing to do with the cabinet temperature. All the electrics for any gas appliance approved by the AGA in Australia have to have tropical rated electrics which is a poultry 38°C. While there is a 'T' stamped on the Thetford specification plate this applies to the electrical standards only and not to the cabinet temperatures like the Euro standard. This requirement of a 'T' on the specification place was a very bad blunder by the AGA. Thetford and non-T rated Dometic fridges will not keep store your food to Australian food safety standards. Hence the importance of having a thermometer or better still one of the wireless weather stations to know the cabinet temperature.

If buying a replacement fridge or a new caravan and going to use a 3 way (240v/12v/gas), make sure you stick to the Dometic 'T' tropical rated fridges (which start at the RM7401 110L and up) and leave the Thetfords and other non cabinet rated 'T' rated fridges to food poision others. It is ridiculous fridges like the non cabinet 'T' tropical rated can be sold in Australia that do not conform to Australian food safety standards.)"

Paul

Do you know which caravan companies install these fridges

We are considering

Jacyo, Corrimal & A Van

Failing that hubby might let me draft a plan and get one made from a company in QLD

Di, we have ordered a new Jayco, 19.61-4 which will be here in August and it comes with a Dometic RM2553 150 ltr 3 way. I asked to have a tropical rated model installed but the agent said that they don't come with a tropical rating and all models are the same. What he said Dometic do is fit a 12 volt fan which when turned on is thermostatically controlled in the back to keep the workings cool. This comes on when the temp in the back gets above 30degC. This is the way we went, it cost an extra $160.00. I fitted a fan to our other van and it made the fridge work a lot better. I only used it on hot days.
Hope this helps.

So the caravan company doesn't have a particular brand that they use

I just assumed it was only size that you had a choice with

Jayco I assume only fit Dometic, i was happy with that so didn't ask if they fitted any other brand. I had the choice on the size and we nearly went with a 2 door 180 ltr but stayed with the 1 door 150 ltr.
