I am looking at replacing shortly the tyres on GU Patrol. They currently have BF A/T but looking at the Coopers A/T instead. The tyres on them are the standard size to suit the rim which I think is 265/70R16's. What can I legally upgrade to knowing that by going for larger tyres, it will throw the tacho out.

Depends on where your registered and what is contained in your user manual as opposed to tyre placard, Meerkat.

But 235/85/16 or 265/75/16 are fine.

Mine in Victoria allows allows to 33in because my manual states that one model of 2002 GU uses 245/85/16 so going up to 255/85/16 or 1 size is max allowed.

I have all 4 sizes actually, but on sets of 7 inch trak11 offset 10mm rims as I am not keen on fat tyres and excessive weight and strain on steering components and wheel bearings.

Hi meerkat, slight correction there, it won't throw your TACHO out, but your speedo will be incorrect.

Did u carefully read the fine print on the Coopers.
I didnt buy them because they are by no means guaranteed in ALL of Australia
The bit I read restricted them to roads and tar seal mainly.

Dont ask me to find it
It went out with the idea.

I put 265x75 16 BFG on both my Gu's over 11 years and both speedos are nearly perfect against a GPS. 265x75 x16 is the most popular sixe in 16" tyres, so you can get a replacement almost anywhere.. they are slightly taller but dont cause much of a problem with Patrols High first gear in take off...
