G'day all,
Early next month I'm heading off to have a look at Lake Eyre with water in it. Thought that I had better do it before I fall off the perch. I will be going via Qld. Birdsville etc. As I drive a Falcon Ute, no L.S.D. I need to know if I can access the lake OK, if not, what is the closest I can get to it in a 2wd and from what point.
Cheers,
terryc.

Hi Terry
Was at Lake Eyre about 2 weeks ago. Magnificent sight of water about 200 metres off shore at Halligan Bay. Well worth the journey. You can camp at the bay and pay at the self registration point at the entrance if you don't have a Desert Parks Pass.

You will need to take the Birdsville Track to Maree then the Oodnadatta Track to the turnoff to Halligan Bay about 10km short of William Creek.

The Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks are both in excellent condition (best I've seen in 12 years of travelling them quite a few times). No worries for a 2WD if you keep the speed down.

The Halligan Bay track is about 62 km in and very rough in places. Should be OK for 2WD if you take it easy BUT not after any recent rains. Check conditions at William Creek or with other travellers you meet.

Safe travelling and enjoy the great sight.
Regards
Rob

You may be lucky and find water in it. We did a flight from Birdsville on Tuesday 16th. The cost had risen from $500 to $600 in a couple of steps from the time we first enquired. This was because of the time taken to get to the water as it is receding fast. What was a 3 hour trip took us nearly 4 hours. I believe the cost will be up to $650 now to find the water.

The time over the lake was a bit of a disappoint due to the dropping level. However the flight was worth it just to fly over the channels and creeks with the water in them.
