If the locals in the places you have been get TV with a simple roof antenna (not something on a huge pole), you should too.... are you scanning in the right mode ? I'm just learning to use my Wineguard antenna / TCL digital flat screen system - analogue is "TV" mode in their lingo - digital tv is DBR I think (I'm not in the van now). There is a different scan menu for each mode AND a different coax jack for each - I have to move the coax plug as I change modes.

I suggest you talk to a TV antennae guy in the next big town you visit.

What brand of TV? Someone might have the same and give advice.

I travel extensively and not used my satellite TV in 3 yrs. Since the roll out of digital TV I get TV nearly everywhere. On a 1 night stand if there is no TV we dont bother with the satellite.
Winegard only do horizontal polarisation and half of TV transmitters are in vertical or cross polarisation (both horizontal and vertical).
With the TV charts and maps I know if there is TV coverage where we are, and which polarisation the TV Tx is. I then set my aerial up for the polarisation, aim my aerial correctly first time switch on and tune.
Winegard is 10/10 for convenience but 2/10 for reception and with no vertical polarisation never had one fitted to the new van.

So what is your big secret and what aerial do you have, if as you say you havent used your satellite in 3 years.

We had only a Winegard which as you say is pretty hopeless in country areas so we have gone satellite and have TV ANYWHERE, in town or middle of nowhere.

A far better idea.

Thanks for the info I had a feeling the winegard wasn't up to scratch. What aerial do you use and how do you know what signal is being sent? thanks Nashy

When you get to a new park look to see where the vans that are there have their aerial pointed.
Also look at the nearest houses and see if the aerials are flat ( Horizontal Polarity) or vertical ( Vertical polarity)

Easy as.

Then go and set up the dish and watch everything.

Even easier

First origin game I missed the second half trys.

Was watching the game on eastern channels then switched to WA and watched it again.

Are you tuning your set for each place you arrive at and as said digital is only in the big centres.
IF your remote has a button for "source" set it to "TV" or analogue.

look at this site

www.accessantennas.com.au/CaravanKit.html

I bought the $539 set but got the inclinemeter with it free, also upgraded to the box that you can timeshift on. With a generic card and postage cost $638 posted to Alice Springs from Perth.

The larger the dish the easier to get a signal.

Dont bother with a digital sat finder not worth the extra the ordinary one is fine.

Also these guys include an Optus card which is worth $99 as well.

As long as you dont have heavy tree cover it works really well.

Dont buy a 60cm dish as a guy beside me in Tennant Creek had one, and even after an hour and a half we could not get a lock on the satellite that has Select TV (Pas8)

I store my dish against the Cargo barrier in a Cruiser so is not a problem. Lots just put them on the bed.
