My Parents are planning to travell accross the Nullabour later this year and will be staying in motel accomodation. Although I have travelled back and
forth several times I just pull of the road and
camp, so I dont know what the standard of the motels are currently.
They are looking at doing
Norseman to
Eucla one day then on to
Ceduna the next. However due to age and driving times they need a back up plan in case they dont make
Eucla before dark.
Does any one know what the motels at Madura,
Mundrabilla,
Eucla & Border Village and Nullabor are like? Which would be the better ones to stay at. They are aware that out there that 5 star is not a option but they are looking for clean.
Regards
Alan

Alan,
Not sure of the quality but there are plenty of units at Madura. The units at Nullabor looked ok & if it is anything to go by, the showers etc attached to the caravan section were in good condition & clean. Nullabor also has a restaurant that was ok & from memory it was not over priced, as at last November.

Wife and I stayed at
Mundrabilla Motel on our way west in April '06. It was quite the worst place I have ever stayed!! Frightfully run down, old, and decrepit.
We had wanted to
camp out the back, but the owner/manager/whatever said they had no ablutions block (even though we had used the loo before enquiring). Told him we had a shower in the car, but no ... could not
camp.
Got a room ($80, if you please) that had a sagging roof and was
well past its use by date. We tagged it "Motel Hell", and had a good laugh about it, but it was the pits.
I would only stay there in an absolute emergency.
Had we travelled a little further on we'd have discovered a
nice camp area off the road, but were not aware of it being there when we pulled in to the Motel.
If it shows no sign of being refurbished in recent times, drive on.

I went through there in 2006 and was going to stop there but got told a similar story about no camping because the ablutions we being redone.
Sounds liek they dont like campers. From all reports though they are one of the cheapest out there for fuel.

When I went across the Nullarbor in 07 I went east to west but eventually stopped at
Norseman. I did Nullarbor Village/Roadhouse to
Norseman in one day so
Eucla is easily attainable even though it's a 650 km drive. From there
Ceduna is only about 500 kms away. Maybe 12/13 hours travelling in total
The road is rather straight for a majority of the distance which is no problem if you have a perspective. However, in the section from
Norseman, starting before Balladonia, the road on each side is bordered by high trees and all you can really see is the road ahead. This runs for about 500 kms and fatigue/lack of concentration could be an issue. It is certainly the most boring drive I've ever done - give me a wide open perspective every time. It was like driving through a roofless tunnel. The trees eventaully give way and you have the grandeur that is the Nullarbor.
This site will give them some ideas on where to stay if they
stop short

G'day Alan,
Stayed overnight at Madura in Jan 04. At that time it was OK, but as you suspect not 5 star.
We found it reasonably comfortable and although parts of the units are getting a bit older, they were reasonably clean at that time.
Like all of the accommodation out along that way, they are not cheap.
From memory it was around 80 ~ 90 bucks for the night.

Just looked up the details from that trip on a spreadsheet I had done and I see that the room at that time cost us $99.50.
may pay them to look up the current prices, but if that's as far as they can go, then they're probably stuck with paying the price asked.
Better than running of the road through fatiigue though.

They are fairly reasonable and have travelled around and understand that in remote areas things cost more. They understand that accomodation wont be five star and expensive. Clean and fancy are two dfferent things, and when you are paying a lot you should get at least a clean & tidy room, doesnt have to be fancy.
