Told the company i work for that i am off around oz for 12 to 15 months with the family in 3 months time. Actually im surprised how much of a releif it is to have told them. They took it really well and were very appreciative of the notice i have given them. Now its going to be a long 3 months but at least now the cats out of the bag an we have a deadline to work to.

hi bluerider
i was in the same boat a few years ago. but i was the boss i had to tell 10 employees i was off around oz for a couple of years and they would not have a job in three months. that was very stressful, took several months to make up my mind to do the trip knowing the consequences so it works both ways. i did not want the hassle of the business while i was on the road. cut along story short my brother became a partner employees began profit share in business and i became a very silent partner. works very well still going today. i have moved on to other things. but i did enjoy my two years on the road.
regards
al

You lucky person, Bluerider! The most I could ever take off was 5 weeks, and I still had to give 3 months notice!! The first time I did it, the boss had forgotten all about it until a week or two before, but he made sure he remembered next time :)

thanks for your comments everyone. we have been working towards this for a good 2 years or so. we have gotten ourselves in a position to do it comfortably through a lot of hard work and planning and we are very excited. I am not sure if the company i work for will hold my job for me but we planned for them not to. they didnt seem to give any signs of hard feelings or bitterness so who knows i may even to do my trip with the security of knowing i have a job when i get back. if they cant find a chair for me on my return i will just start another chapter of my life somewhere else. who cares if i end up with no oney and no job, i will have had at least 12 months of my life with my wife ad kids every day that i priceless and really what life is all about.
