Great Central Road Feedback

We are currently traveling with Classic Rangie 1995 model & 1960 model 16ft Millard silver caravan from Victoria, have traveled via Stuart Hwy to Coober Pedy to William Creek on the 8th June 2009 with a flight over Lake Eyre then up to Oodnatta to Marla via the Oodnatta track, track in quite good condition had been some rain before we got their but wet patches solid. On to Uluru, left Uluru Saturday 13th June for Docker River, broke stub axle 40 k before Docker River, we had been told not to go into Docker River but no choice, the locals were very helpful both, black & white, we got an old axle out of the tip which fixed the problem, lost 1/2 day all up, camped at Lasseters cave for the night then on to Warakurna & Giles, would recommend Giles weather station to everybody, the road was fair to good through to Warburton then extremely rough & slow down to 40 k hour to Tjukarila had broken spring on van on arrival, but had a spare so only lost less than 1 hour , road was good & graders working rest of way to Laverton then sealed to Kalgoorlie. 4 days travelling with old van & well worth doing. Then onto Yorke, Pemberton, Albany, Esperance across the Nullabour, Ceduna & currently at Port Lincoln, 8619 k so far. Great trip all the way.

Well done....please post some pictures of your rig, especially the van so we all can have a look.

Having done the trip myself, I can relate to all that you have expirienced and we too visited Docker River and bought lunch there....interesting place.
Our trip was without incident and we loved it and will do it again.

Thats correct but as we broke down just a couple of hundred meters from the cave and it was dark when we got mobile again we elected to camp there for the night. We had also discussed with the people at Docker River about camping there if necessary & they told us that was not a problem. We left the parking area probably cleaner than it was when we arrived. We did not consider it wise to travel at night without being able to fully check out the temporary fix as well as wildlife problems at night. The axle got us to Kalgoorlie with frequent checks & re tightening of the u-bolts, where we repaired it properly.

I camped at Docker about a month ago and found it to be a nice quiet area but all the toilets and the water supply had been seriously vandalised. A pity because it could be a money earner for the community.Lasseters Cave would also be an ideal camp area, looks it probably was at some time in the past.

Wow!! Sounds like you have had a great time. One worrying thing though..... 1995 is now Classic... It seems like just yesterday... :-)

Enjoy the rest of your trip.
