Hi,
I've just had my first phone bill since using the "BUZZB0X" cheap phone call system and assure you I've made calls to Britain that only cost a few $$ (less than the price of a coffee) that would have cost an arm an both legs if they had gone thru TELstra...
Wondering if any other guys (or gals) are using similar technology ??
The BuzzBox is a small box that's placed between your
home phone and the wall-socket and comes into action as soon as you pick up your phone to make a call.

No broardband connection is needed, not even a computer as it's not reliant on your internet connection.
I believe it's an invention from University of Western Australia and Curtin University of Technology, developed here in Australia.

I use a VOIP connection thru MYNETPHONE and by paying $100 for a year in advance I get 100 calls a month untimed anywhere in Australia.
Only pay extra for 13 or 1800 calls
Can ring NZ for 3.5 c a minute whereas Telstra calls cost us up to $4.50 a time it now costs as little as 75c
Very worthwhile system especially while travelling.
Also use SKYPE a fair bit to call friends who are on the internet.
This is even better cos its free.
The
home pnone is on the way out with Naked DSL being more widespread.
This is like having a Claytons phone.
You have a phone line but no Telstra phone connected and its done thru the internet .
You can read how its done at www.iinet.net.au and go to Naked DSL page.
Will be my choice for my next house.

ENGIN have plans costing $19.95 per month that gives unlimeted, untimed calls Australia wide plus overseas calls to over 8 major countries for free.
Needs broadband connection - they also have broadband plans to go with it now...

Graham
If you currently use MyNetPhone why dont you try their Naked ADSL. Your phone calls become even cheaper.

Would need a very long cord as am on an extended trip around
the block.
Thats why I said "In my next house"
On downside of Naked Dsl is that they take both uploads and downloads in your allocation whereas most plans other than Telstra dont.
Iinet are the same their ordinary plans are up only but naked is both.

Fair call lol.
I use the Bigpond Gateway with mynetphone. Not cheap at 90bucks a mth BUT...being wireless I take it with me when I go away in my bus. %gig a mth and I would call myself a heavey user of the net. Only time I ever go close is when my son comes
home from the
mine and insists on plugging into my connection.

Mainey that is interesting in that it doesn't use broadband. It is pretty expensive though.
Also look at mynetphone supersaver which also has no monthly charges.
It isquite a bit cheaper and no flagfall.
Local calls only 12.5c all day instead of 17.5c ( more than 1 min)
National calls only 12.5c all day instead of 49c.
UK is 1.9c per min instead of 30c plus 9.7c per min ( ie you could talk for 15 mins before you exceed the 30c flag fall charge only.)
Only catch is you need broadband, and a Voip box. That is $20 but includes $20 of calls.
My wife usually spends 1 hour a day on the phone overseas and our monthly bill is abut $30.00
It never ceases to amaze me that you can call a mobile in say HK for 1.9 cents a minute but it costs 66 cents a minute to call a mobile of someone 3 feet away in Australia.

Been using MyNetFone for several years now.....with phone line on cheapest line rental due to it's redundancy as a phoneline.
With most of the VOIP providers being under 10c per call, local or national, your own DID number for most
places, and now with CLI overstamping (displaying your "
home phoneline" number as the outbound number), free calls to other VOIP users, etc they is little reason not to go VOIP as a broadband user.
For a system that doesn't need a broadband connection, it seems interesting. It cannot compare with VOIP for pricing though it does a good attempt at reducing costs. Great idea for those not having broadband, or just need/want a "plug and forget" setup, they seem the best option.

I use Smartvoice. No monthly fees, just a very low fee per (untimed) call. It is very difficult to compare plan costs as they are all a bit different and the actual cheapest depends on the pattern of usage in your house. For the kind of mix of local, interstate; international and calls to mobiles that we use, Smartvoice seemed to me at the time I took it out (this may have changed, new plans keep coming on) to be the cheapest. I've been very happy with Smartvoice service.
Melbourne company and I am in SA, but it doesn't seem to be an issue.
My Netcomm wireless modem has a connector built in so that it also acts as a Voip box. It connects to my regular Uniden cordless phone setup so we have 4 cordless phones around the house all operating through Voip. It uses regular phoneline ( we use the absolute cheapest connection from Telstra so we pay rental only to them, but get a regular phone number. If Voip ever drops out it operates as a standard phone line automatically.
We have saved a squillion with this setup over the last three years.

WOW telecommunications at its best.
I use PennyTel for
home calls and PennySIM for mobile.
Land Line.
PENNY VOIP CALL PLANS FREE ACCESS (UNTIMED) just one of 4 plans
Our best plan for longer calls to Australia*, UK*, USA, Canada, China and Singapore
Just AUD$0.08 per call!
Mobile.
8c connection and 8c per 30 seconds, so the first minute is 24c and the 2nd is 16c.that is 2 minutes which is cheaper than some companies first 30 seconds.
Wont
bore on free calls to PennyTel numbers, what i will say is that my mobile to
home is a free, yes free call :)
Pennytel and PennySim
Just a note. You can have a land line number in any state. e.g 02xxx or 08 xxx etc. If you have children or parents in another state, they can call you doe a local call.
Now that is my 8 cents worth.
