Hi all,
Does anybody know what my electronic options are for my 2F engined,FJ60 cruiser?is there a factory unit from the 80 series that fits,or an aftermarket conversion?
If no,any tips on maximising my point/plug life for LPG?i go through points a lot(approx every 3,000km,and plugs about evry 10,000km).im happy with the condition of my coil, condensor, rotor, cap, leads etc.
Thanks,
Wazza

Hey Wazza. Do a google on Pertronix Ignitor electronic ignitions. They do 2 for the 2F. They retrofit into your existing distributor and look stock. Not too expensive either. Lots of auto parts places carry them. I used one in my Dodge flathead 6 and it's the best thing ever. Very easy install.

Mallory used to do a twin point distributor for the 2F and later added an electronic unit to the range.

Maybe they are still available.

If the internal bearings fitted to your existing distributor are in good nick I'd personally go for Louie's suggestion.

Probably a heap cheaper and definitely a lot less work!

Curiosity question as I've never owned a gas fueled vehicle, how come it's so hard on points? That'd suggest to me your condenser is shagged!

I don't think the gas thing would have anything to do with the points burning.. may have something to do with the plugs though, perhaps a different heat range plug is required for gas?

I agree with your comment on the condenser, the sole purpose of which (as I understand it) is to suppress arcing across the points..
Too high a voltage at the coil (ignition side) will also burn points.. Jap petrols usually have a low voltage (7 - 9v) coil w/- ballast resistor, which is by-passed during cranking.. If this resistor is not used, short point life will be the result.

Hi Ed,
You've summed up my thoughts precisely.

A condenser is really more accurately named a capacitor and a capacitor across any set of DC contacts is to reduce arching and therefore contact burning.

A shorted or removed ballast resistor will, as you say cause excessive point burning too.
