Hello all in the process of upgrading trailer axle to 45mm sq. Can anyone tell me do I have to wield the saddle to the axle(sits between the spring and the axle) to prevent sideways movement or a the U bolts enough?

Hi Blaster,
Yes, I believe so.
Mine certainly are anyway. As you say, it prevents the axle from moving around. I would certainly recommend it for a trailer likely to go off-road.
Cheers
Gerry

When I changed axles to fit a different wheel offset I had to weld the two
square washers to the new axle to accomodate the protruding centre bolt in
the bottom of the spring. It will probably be obvious when you remove old
axle whether such action is necessary......oldbaz.

I got my 7x4 box trailer registered on Friday and the inspector at the DPI site looked to ensure that my saddle pad was welded to the axle.
Thats in WA.

A number of years ago I replaced my old round axle which had bent from a hard life with a square one. I bought a galvanised axle so I never considered to weld to it. Also none of my other trailers with round axles ever had anything welded to them so I cannot see why it should be different just because it is square. I often drive on corrugated and very rough roads and the square axle has never moved. That would be about 5 years now.
Cheers Tony.
