No, not the DSE or other retailer toy models that run on 4 x AA batts - I'm looking for a grunty portable running 240W with a decent receiver and aerial for my van so I can pick up overseas radio broadcasts, news, sport etc. Can't find anything at GME or Uniden - surely there must be something on offer - radio shops appear to be as numerous around here as honest politicians. HELP PLEASE !
cheers

T-Ribby, It's nice to hear from a fellow shortwave fan in the internet age.
Don't know about 240V receivers, but there are some good battery jobs around. Search Sony and Sangean, both of which have some good sets. Be aware they are not all that cheap.
Cheers, Tony

Hi there. Couldn't agree more with Tony. I bought a Sony portable about 10 years ago for almost $300. As
well as world-wide SW, it also beats any other radio in picking up MW and even FM. The car radio and the caravan radio can be incapable of finding anything, and the Sony will pick up a range of stations.
I have yet to find a solution to the problem of content! If every available station is broadcasting rubbish, then guess what your Sony will find! But that's no worse than TV, eh?

Tony, the olddigger and T.Rib the oldNavyradiooperator. I can still do morse, standard or bug key, at 20-30wpm iirc ! so I tend to hang onto the old technology. I can get streaming radio via my laptop but it 'aint the same
I currently looking at both Sony and Sangean - didn't know about Sangean.
Chris - I couldn't agree more about TV. In between the multitude of garbage is maybe one or two good programs.
cheers

The Sony icf sw7600gr is about as good as it gets for what you describe. And guess what? 4 x AA.
It's all about the antenna. You don't use 240W to recieve. 0.5W is plenty ( to drive the speaker)

For all my gadgets that use AA & AAA's I need a trailer to carry the spares.
I'm looking at both Sony & Sangean - thanks for the model details

Nothing wrong with battery radios. You just get a power brick and use them on 240 V when it is available.

Gidday
can u get sw broadcasts on HF transceivers? I seem to remember someone in the group i was out back with last year using theirs to listen to news on Radio Australia.
I have Sangean's best, the ATS 909, abt $500 worth. You won't find one in regular elecrical retaiilers but a google search will find the specialists who sell them.
works much better on the supplied 6m wire antenna than with the whip. It does work on 4AAs but chews em up, better to have a stock of rechargeables.
Cheers

Wow, I had a look at the ATS909, the top of the line Sangean. I see there are other ones in their lineup, and one of those is on the short list, also the Sony model mentioned above. Also found two other mentions; the Tecsun BCL-2000 and the Grundig S350. Gets interesting - just when I was thinking there were no good SW receivers out there and contemplating a raid on the Destroyer tied up in Darling Harbour with a spare B40D in the radio room.
cheers

Doug, see my previous followup post regarding married with children.
Just as an aside, in the old (not neccessarily good) days, our pre-TV valve wireless sets were mostly all short wave as
well as medium. I can recall listening to the BBC fading in and out.
cheers

Hi T-Ribby,
I'm also in the market for a portable SW Receiver.
My main purpose for it is to receive weather reports from BOM. They transmit in Single Side Band, which neither of your short list picks support. I'm not sure if this is a consideration for you. It's critical for me.
At this point my short list includes the Sangean ATS-505 & ATS-909. I've been unable to find any others that are available in Australia, but I'm still looking into it. You never know what might appear.
