We are starting to plan a trip in the Sept school hols to Lake Eyre. The sheer distance is something we are trying coming to terms with in how we plan our days to get there.
Has anyone from
Brisbane or surrounds got an intinerary they could share with us? We have 18 days to get there and back.
We currently thinking of driving via
Cunnamulla,
Cameron Corner, Lake Eyre and then home via
Lightning Ridge.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! BTW - we have a 4WD and will be
camping. Also two
young kids in tow , so too many long long days of driving are kind of out ! Thanks

G'day HH,
We came back from Lake Eyre about 6 weeks ago. Our route was a bit different to yours - basically the
Oodnadatta and Strzelecki tracks and the Adventure Way. From
William Creek, we had overnight (or longer) stops at:-
Farina,
Montecollina Bore,
Innamincka, Nocundra,
Yowah,
St George then home to
Brisbane.
From memory, most of those legs were less than 250kms so that gave us reasonable travel while still leaving plenty of time to set up
camp before it got dark.
If you go via
Innamincka, I'd certainly suggest you checkout a detour to Coongie Lakes. Lots of
water and birdlife there.
Cheers,
Chris

Agree with chris and sue
did a similar trip may and june and dont be tooooo disapointed at the lack of
water by the time you hit lake eyre.
Highly recommend Coogie Lakes for a week or so and also the upper channel country above
Birdsville if the
water is still in the lagoons by then.
take your time and enjoy

I'd suggest HH that there will unfortunately be very little
water in Lake Eyre by September if that's what you hope to see. For
water & birdlife in the outback, Coongie Lakes &
water holes around
Innamincka would probably be a better destination at that time.
The
Lake Eyre Yacht Club web site shows current conditions & although it hasn't been updated for 4 weeks now, the Sat photo shows the rivers have all but stopped & the Lake has receded to less than 10% coverage.
It wont be long before the fat lady sings.
Cheers Craig.................

inside track to
Birdsville being open early September ?

Going on previous years when the
Warburton crossing & surrounding plains have flooded my guess is yes it will have dried out by September. I've heard the river it's self is low enough to cross but the track beyound is too wet. My brother intends to try the Rig rd in 4 weeks if open so can report back then.
I'm sure Ruth from
Birdsville will have more reliable local knowlege when it's available.
Cheers Craig...............

Hi
Thanks for replies. It would have been a bonus if there was
water in Lake Eyre, but we would just like to see it however it is at that time. Thanks for the tips about the lakes near Innaminka. We hadnt thought of going that way- but rather cutting through down to
Cameron Corner.
