Gday,

Has anyone been up to Cape Melville recently? Just wondering if anyone would like to share their experiences up there. I am planning to go up in September with my new camper trailer. Dont have a boat for it yet, but its coming...! Is it worth going up there without a boat?

I noticed on Cook Shire Website and the following link that roads are still closed, so I doubt if anyone has been there this year (That were allowed too). Should be Ok in September though. Look at the Cook Shire Web site to see latest road conditions.

Other than that it a great spot and have fun. Cheers Tony

Hi John,
We were at the Cape only a few weeks ago and the road to Cape Melville definately was open.
I noticed much of the online information relating to road status was not regularly updated when researching for our trip. This was particularly true for local and state Government websites.
For the latest info from recent travellers I have found the Cape Yorker Forum to be the most helpful.
Another suggestion is to phone the Rangers direct at Lakefield National Park and they will steer you in the right direction.

I hope this helps.

Brett

Thanks for that Brett. Did you tow a camper trailer up there? Or just the vehicle?

Hi John,

We did not tow anything but some good friends of mine all towed campers without problems and were about 2 weeks earlier than our group.

River levels were about 1ft less for our group than theirs but generally, all tracks were quite easy and in good condition.

We had a standard Pajero in our group which had no problems with the Old Telegraph Track and the Frenchman's Track.

Take your time and you will have no problems taking the camper on all of the main tracks.

Have fun up there!!!
