I am planning a trip to the Kimberleys, leaving
Melbourne early August. I was thinking of returning from
Port Hedland to
Alice Springs via the Telfer
Mine Road and the
Gary Junction Road.
I realise that this is quite remote.
We have a 2002 Landcruiser T/D with heavy duty
suspension, 272 litres fuel capacity, a satellite phone and comprehensive navigation. We will have about 200 litres of
water. We have travelled extensively previously and will be towing an Ultimate Offroad Camper. The L/C has its standard spare and so does the camper. The
wheels are interchangeable between the two, and we also will take two extra complete spares on a roof rack. We have allowed six days to travel from
Port Hedland to
Alice Springs.
I realise that I will have to apply for a few permits for this trip.
Any opinions and/or suggestions?
Barry

G'day Barry,
We also are travelling this way, I have researched fuel and permits, these should not be a problem. Had our permits approved withi a couple of weeks.
We will be o this road at the end of July, and will be travelling
Gary Junction and then onto Kidman Track. We are also travelling on our own and towing a T-Van. We also have done some extensive preparation and carrying plenty of fuel and
water as
well as spares. Everyone on this site has been realy helpfull. If you do a search their are some good responses. Happy also for you to ring me if you like - 0428311205, we are also in
Melbourne.

You'll have no probolems with the road, we've travelled both ends ( Alice to past
Kintore & Port Headland to Rudall ) and friends and other EO members have travelled the other bits and it is mostly pretty good, bit corrugated round the CSR and when we left Alice in early June there were plenty of muddy spots up to
Kintore but pretty good travelling all the same.
Remember the locals travel this route mostly in Falcons.

You'll have no worries. Road from Hedland to
Marble Bar and then the magnificent Rippon Hills Road to Woodie Woodie is all bitumen. Telfor road is in great condition down to Kurnawarritji. A bit corrugated (minor) for 5 km either side of the canning but then OK to Alice. A few patches of rock here and there and it gets a bit rough in the vicinity of communities but an easy run. Super highway once past the
WA/NT border (NT side that is).
Cheers Mick
