Hi all looking at purchasing a 4.2 Diesel GQ Patrol that sometimes doesn't start unless you physically rock the vehicle, starter motor has been replaced, it sound like the pinion doesn't engage.

Maybe the ring gear is stuffed and locks the pinion in.

How much would I be looking at, roughly, to replace/fix the ring gear? Thanks.

What was the starter replaced with..?..and what kilometreage is the motor..?..
a second hand unit, a reco or new one.. if the 2 latter ones, I would also call the ring gear on the flywheel...

The starter motor was replaced with a new one. In which case how much would replacing/fixing the ring gear on the flywheel cost? The motor was replaced about 120,000 km ago with a TD 4.2T GU motor, the overall mileage on the vehicle is about 400,000 km. Thanks

To replace the ring gear requires the removal of the gearbox and clutch.

Hi everyone who replied thanks for your help it appears that the ring gear is the most likely issue.
