Hi,
I had some one extend my diff breathers.
They ran tubes from the breathers and tucked the ends up under the window end of the engine bay. They seem fairly protected.
I noted that the ends are open. When I was chasing these down it seemed people were putting a filter or something like that on the ends of the tubes.
Is what I have OK.
Richard

Hi Richard,
Some people put inline fuel filters on the end of the breather line so dust and other crap wont be sucked back into the line.

Richard
I have just done
mine on the GU Ute and run them all ( diff's, gearbox and transfer case) to a manifold made from garden sprinkler fittings and fitted one fuel filter to the manifold the
services all the breather lines.
Regards
John

I will look into getting filters

If it's not going to be too long before you can fit one and your not traveling in dusty dirty conditions it wouldn't hurt.
I would get an oily rag and zip tie it to the end of the hose in the mean time.

It has been like that for awhile unfortunately and I have been around on dirt roads.
I had this done by a local 4wd place while doing other things, I had not thought of it till recently.

Richard, if there's no filter, the open end should at least be turned down (ie. not pointing up) so stuff will fall out rather than into the end.
If you're worried you might have sucked in dirt etc. check you diff oils for contamination - or change the oils if you're worried.

The small in-line style fuel filters will do.... relatively cheap, and also cheap insurance against getting crap in the diffs, t/case etc.....
Cheers

I use the blue ceramic filters from ARB. Work great, are small, and easily replaced. Less likely to such moisture in as
well the dust and other cr*p floating around on 4WD trips.

I saw a description here once where they removed the original fitting and put it on the end of the new tube. It means giving the new tube a threaded spigot that will screw into the diff, however. This way you get the one way protection the vehicle came with.
The original does the job for most of us and I would not be contemplating leaving my hilux immersed for as long as it takes to defeat the design anyway. My advice to anyone who has this happen, is to check the diff when you get home.
Water will settle on the bottom where the drain is overnight.
Diffs must be the most robust of parts that a vehicle has. A bit of
water et al is not going to kill one quickly, I should think. But I leave that one open to others to disagree.

Hi,
The end of the tube for the breathers is ina good spot I reckon i will put on filters. I am a bit annoyed they were not done orginally
The blue ones shown above are cheap - I will check with ARB tomorrow else i will order on the Web site some one point me at.
Thanks for all the help.
