for all things Prado --> www.pradopoint.com

The D4D (new) diesel came out in 2007 I think (weren't available when we bought our petrol Prado) and are considered much better but the earlier engine may meet your requirements. Several family members have had (or still have) and they go ok.

Tvoce - I have owned a 2000 model diesel which was a good motor - then went to 2003 and although they were the same motor in my opinion the 2003 went better than the 2000, Now have a 2008 model with D4D motor and it is the best motor - what would you expect with move power.

Friends who have the older motor are surprised at how the D4D pulls.

Older motor about 96kw, 13L/100km (from memory)
D4D 127kw, 10L/100km or something like that

Get a quote on injector prices first for a d4d, and make sure you are sitting down, arround $1000 ea, due at 200000ks. The older ones are cheap by comparsiuon. Interesting to see if they get any cheaper with time. All common rail injectors are arrround the same price.

Really Pete !

I'd better give up the idea of a diesel 200 series then , 8 of those injectors would power my petrol Patrol for 3 years.

Yes Robin $8000 ouch. Guess if you turn it over at 4 years it would be ok.
All it takes apparantly is dirty fuel and you could be up for injectors and a fuel pump. As a matter of interest Robin could you price the injectors for the v8.
As you say, it negates any fuel savings though.
I though Toyota was bring out a variable valve timing v8, or have they already.

When Toyota brought out the D4D they won the Wheels fourby of the year award for that category. Principally on the motor. There was a 30% increase in power and a 30% decrease in fuel usage over the previous diesel motor. Yes - I bought one.

D4D is the way to go if the $$$ allows it. I have the older shape with the 1KZ motor which was available in the earlier of the new shape. They are now either 4L V6 (great motor also) or the D4D. The 4L will use roughly around the 16/17L per 100 round town. Open road just cruising no towing (highway) my mate has had his down to 11L per 100. D4D round town my mates uses 11L per 100 remembering this is all start stop crap, running kids to school, shopping etc, freeway no towing doing the speed limits with 4 on board, running the climate aircon, _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx and fridge which live permantly in the back he gets 8.4L per 100, fantastic I reckon, then remember these 120 series prados have 180 litre tanks, so will give you a rough indication of touring range, remembering when punching through sand or towing these figures will obviously change to a higher figure more so on the petrol if towing. As madfisher has said injectors are extremely expensive for the D4D if they need replacing. In the first of the D4D's they did have some issues with some injectors playing up so will be somthing to watch out for if you purchase one, first sign normally is shuddering when cold when first starting up and putting your foot down. Some issues with if you like playing in the mud with it getting into the manual gearbox bell housing and stuffing the clutch (if your thinking manual) (go the auto you will love it)...All up I think they are a brilliant all rounder, if your into some pretty hard 4wdriving rock hopping etc then prado is not for you, get a patrol or cruiser.........Regards Steve M

G/day Steve,
how are you finding the 1kz as compared to your previous rig. We have a heap of d4ds at work in luxs, prados, and Hiaces buses. They are brilliant to drive, just worries me a bit when they are getting on a bit and the 2nd or third owner has to start repacing injectors etc. Mind you Toyota injectors will still most likely cheaper then others.
We have just had the first warranty claims on a Toyota in The three years Ihave been their. Seal in a prado diff, and a thrust bearing in a lux. The Lux was putrid to the piont I was just going to hose it out lol, so it may have been playing in mud.
Pretty good effort, and says a lot about toyotas.,
Cheers Pete

Thanks VVVV much for all the experienced information about the D4D's just have to stretch the budget now. I've been searching for one and the 20006/07's they are selling so fast, I suppose as the price is under $40,000 or over if 2007+.

Much appreciated again thanks specially to Steve M.
