I have been doing a bit of road miles of late in the 1993 GQ TD42 .I find when I do a dip stick reading to check the oil I have to wait 20 minutes to get an accurate reading.Is this typical or do I have a blockage in the return passages ?
I have found I used about 300-400ml of oil on the last trip which was approx 750 km, is this too much ? Im not using a full synthetic oil, could this cause the use of oil ?The oil I use now is Gulf Western Top Dog XDO 15W40 Ci4/SL, is it any good ? I dont have any oil leaks so thats not a problem !
Can any one recommend a good engine flush product?
Cheers Niffty

Mmmm sounds like you may have blocked oil galleries, plus carboned up rings. I would think a flush would be in order. CEM have a good name and advertise on this website. Mostly have heard good things about their flush.

sounds typical - best way to get an accurate picture of oil consumption is first thing in the morning. It really can take along time for all the oil to work its way back to the sump

Yup- best time for vehicle check in the morning.
Was called first parade service in the army. I think the acronym was PETROL !!

P= Petrol (or fuel I guess)
E= Electrics, check battery
T= Tyres- to ensure they're all still there
R= Radiator
O= Oil
L= Lights

And I generally check under the vehicle looking for oil leaks, branches, underbody damage etc that may show up...

And dont do what I did. I ran the motor to fill the oil filter before checking the dipstick but I neglected to remove the spigot from the tappet cover. Yep, the rockers came up and broke the tappet cover.

All ok with some patchwork but how dumb am I? (kick kick)

Why would you run a motor BEFORE checking the oil.
That will blow it up through the galleries and give you a low reading when it really isnt .
Most modern oil filters have an antidrain back valve in them anyway.

Have you ever taken one off and havent had oil run out.

After an oil and filter change the filter tends to be a bit empty. Experience has taught me that the reading will be lower after running the motor. Even when I have given enough time for the galleries to drain.

Overfussy but I felt I would like to have it spot on so I could see any change over the next five thousand k. I am not going to make a habit of it however.

Mine does to but I also have a 10 litre drum which I use to put the 10 litres in and as it takes 11.5 I also buy a 5 litre. Then refill the ten out of the remaining in the twenty

After putting the 10 in you can see on the side of the 5 how much you have added thru the translucent bit.
So with the three sizes you can get 3 oil changes no worries.
And a damn sight cheaper than Toyota charge for generic petrol/diesel oil

Dont worry even the so called experts in Toyota just pour it in and dont worry too much
Usually ends up 3/4 in overfull if I let them do it.
I use Penrite Diesel 15.
