I am looking to buy a motorhome with WA rego on my NSW license. Assuming I have a garage address in Perth for the thing, can I do it with my NSW license?
Has anyone else done this for WA rego whilst living interstate? Thanks for your responses.

Rosco you should be able to.

I bought a van in Victoria with a WA licence and a Vic "garaging" address.

I will be doing it again in QLD later this year.

Here is the WA Govt Website:

http://wa.gov.au/

Trawl thru that and see what you can find. I think the correct Department is called something really obscure like Dept for Planning and Infrastructure (crazy eh?).

I will point to a possible hassle with your Insurance, and the fact that if you drive the WA registered vehicle over here on an 'out of state' license you will be concidered to be UN-licensed if you have been in the state for in excess of 3 weeks.

If you have any claim on insurance it can be rejected.

If your picked up by the boys in blue for driving too slo, you will be charged for driving a vehicle with-out a valid licence, because you then have to prove in Court that you have been in the state less than 3 weeks.
Been there done that
unless things have changed in the last few years

Ok, point is I will be traveling with no fixed address except the garage address of the "Bus" (forget to mention this and my HR license I could transfer to the National Scheme). I guess all I wanted to know was can I have an WA registered vehicle on a NSW license, assuming that the bus technically lives in WA.

Cheers.

Mainey, in this case I think the 3 weeks won't apply. Any number of Grey Nomads can be travelling in States other than the one their vehicle is registered in for longer than 3 (I actually think it's months, not weeks) and everything is fine.

I'm sure it only applies if you have come back to your home State for good, which is a nebulous thing isn't it?

When I first arrived here in WA, I was stopped at a booze bus site, my licence was checked and I was asked where I lived. I knew nothing of the laws here at the time so said I've only been here a few months and the 'nice man' advised me to go (with him) to the local RTA and get a new license and get my rego changed over to WA as well (even funnier & longer story - still not resolved)
I had to go 'cause he followed me, I told the person in the RTA when asked where I lived, I had been living on a beach just outa town and she said I would NOT be issued with a WA license unless I had a stable address over here, so I told her I lived at Highway 1 Perth 6000, I was then issued with a WA license with that address, and had it for about 8 years.
Was stopped for speeding, my license was checked, I was asked if it was the Motel in town, I said yes, to avoid any confusion.

Well, I think if I get through WA in less than 3 weeks, I might have missed something.........................
there is stuff to see overthere isn't there?

I've been here since 1997 and would not go back to the East coast, as I believe we have the Best Coast (West Coast) over here.
Will be off again in August for the winter sojourn to a warmer climate with other Grey Nomads.

Rossco, I've gone through all this twice from both sides of the State border.

Pick your motorhome up with a WA garaging address and a NSW mailing address and you can roam our neck of the woods for as long as you like.

You'll be fine.

If you're short of a garaging address let me know and I can arrange one.

3 weeks driving a vehicle registered in different state to your licence - wouldn't many people do that when they hire a car/camper for a holiday?

Hi Rossco
You don't have to have a licence to own a vehicle so it should not matter

I have a WA registered vehicle.
I purchased it when it was located in Victoria.
I live in New Zealand and do not have an Australian drivers licence.
I do have a 'garage' address in WA
I was told by the WA registration people (in writting) that my 'garage' address could be a backpackers or friends house.
The vehicle is insured by a company in Victoria.
I pay the annual registration fees by internet.
I owned the vehicle for three years before it got back to WA for a short visit.
The vehicle is at present in Brisbane.
:-))

Thanks heaps everyone for the replies. I have the garage address sorted and am going to call DPI today to confirm that I can transfer the WA rego with my NSW HR license.
As for doing the trip, it's a long way off, but I guess buying a vehicle to do it in might be a good start.

Cheers.

You will have NO problem.
The license has nothing to do with it.
Keep the WA plates, it's the best you can have and with a camping vehicle it is no problem whatsoever. I have a vehicle parked on our property from overseas friends, with VIC license plates.
good luck
