I am sending my parents off in a 6 berth motor home
this Friday Leaving Darwin around 9am Heading to Cairns in QLD
Any one know current Diesel prices along the way ?
Where to buy diesel & where to stay away from - any good camping spots ?

Due to work commitments I can not join them so I am giving them a quick
crash course in operating my Navman GPS & Nikon DSLR Camera.
They haven't driven to cairns in about 13 years but we have gone to Darwin to Mt Isa last year.

I should also note they will only be away for a week - coming back via QANTAS
This is a test for my parents to see if they like it or not - otherwise they will stick to there commodore & staying in motels etc. They are use to long distance driving in a car / 4wd - Darwin to Alice 18hrs 1500km
but this is the real test to see if a motor home is there thing or not.

Regretably the fuel prices section is of liitle use. The Shell Oil Co. decided that they are no longer in the petrol retailing business as they explain on their website. http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?siteId=au-en&FC2=/home/au-en/html/iwgen/leftnavs/zzz_lhn3_2_4.html&FC3=/au-en/tailored/shell_for_motorists/fuels/cpp/cpp_retail_pricing.html

And so about 2 months ago they stopped the daily update of their prices that Ex Oz relied on. Hence there are now hardly any sites listed and they are all way out of date. What was once a very useful public service has been scrapped in the name of ........? One only has to think of multinational oil company and many phrases will come to mind!!!! Even if you didn't fuel up at a Shell servo at least you had their price to compare with the others. Maybe they were afraid that you'd see their price and then shop elswhere. Clearly, what was once of benefit to the customer has been lost.... Glenn

I will try that site link again. Site linkSite link
Still no luck, but this is Shell's home page so you can see the petrol pricing icon on the right hand side.... Glenn

In our so far 5 month trip we have learned to buy fuel at larger towns and stay away from roadhouses which generally are very expensive.
We carry 2 jerry cans to enable us to bypass them and only ever top up a bit if absolutely necessary.
Camps 5 would be helpful for where to camp free
Cheers

I came across the other way about 6 weeks ago....

Cheap camping and good places at

Daly Waters Pub ($10 each)
Banka Banka Station ($8 each...no power)
Avon Downs just inside the NT border from QLD. Great free camp opposite a big police station.

Fuel prices were all around the same price and some people told me NOT to get it at Barkly Homestead, or Three ways. Turned out that fuel was cheaper at these two places than Camooweal in Qld (and they still had the 8c levy)

Not sure of prices to teh nearest dollar, but it will get more excpensive as you head south, so worth while topping up every few hundred kilometres.

Most expensive will be the Three Ways and Barkley Road House, then the cheapest will be Mt Isa for a while. So if you can only top up enough to get to the Isa, then full up. Then as you get past Richmond the prices will start dropping again.

Veight,

Darwin to Cairns is around 2600kms. Don't get too fixated on fuel prices for a one-off trip. Do the math on average fuel consumption, add a bit of fudge factor and calculate the extra cost at an additional 40c/litre to normal. I don't think it will add up to a make or break amount.

The main thing is that they should enjoy themselves and not worry about a few extra dollars at this stage.

Regards
