Hi All,

Can anyone offer the current condition or describe the state of the Savannah Way please from Cairns to Normanton and then down to Cloncurry??? We are travelling with children and in caravans that arent OFFROADERS and not sure whether this path would be suitable.

Alternatively we will go back to Townsville and use the Flinders Way! We didnt want to recross our path if we dont need to....

Thanks in advance

Yes Black stuff all the way - Some single lane bitumen. Pull over and off for trucks is best and let them have it. You will have no troubles. Regards Tony

We did the drive from Cloncurry to Normanton and then across to Atherton this past week. Probably 25 - 30 percent single lane bitumen and the rest good dual lane bitumen. I would say the worst bit was the narrow road over the mountains between Atherton and Ravenshoe - not the best with a large caravan in tow. You will find the trip no problem at all with a conventional caravan.

Sealed all the way and you'll find many caravans travelling that route, you'll also encounter Roadtrains , for that you will find some helpful info HERE

Hi There,
We've just done this in reverse a few weeks ago.
Going with a normal caravan will not be a problem. Both sections have bitumen all the way although they do resort to a single lane in quite a few places. You'll need to get off the bitumen altogether when road trains are approaching - just wait for them to pass is the safest option as sometimes the white plastic road posts (whatever you call them) can inhibit forward progress when the truck takes up all the bitumen. So pull off on to the gravel when road trains approach and wait for them to pass you - else you might collect a post. The dust that is thrown up can be incredible.

We didn't do this but you might want to close a sheet of plastic between your screen door and the door proper. This may help keep out some of the dust from entering the vents on the bottom of the door. We had a fair bit of dust to clean up each time we stopped.

Barring changes to the road due to recent flooding etc the road should be fine. Sealed all the way. Long strecthes of single lane sealed. Short stretches of two lanes for overtaking.

A mate of mine did that trip in the reverse direction with a holden commodore towing a jayco swan. Do as suggested-slow down, pull off the road and stop when a road train approaches- Give then all the room they need so they stay on the sealed stuff and dpn't throw up big rocks and stones.
