Hello All,

I have a 2005 GU Patrol 3.0 lt Diesel, the fan belt is sqeaky, like a canary is under the bonnet. I have replaced the belt (non-genuine) and the noise went away for a couple of days and then came back. So I then i put soap on the belt and the noise went away for a couple of days. Now it is back again, Nissan have mod that can be carried out which involes replacing water pumps, pulleys etc which is not really practical. Has anyone had this problem? If so how do i fix it?

Any help greatly apprecaited.

Regards

If you're satisfied that the tension is correct, I've had good success shuttin' up noisy belts by rubbing a stick of chalk (of the blackboard variety) on as much of bearing surface as ya can get at... Usually lasts quite a while before they start doin' it again... ;-)

Give it a try, and see how ya go..

The 3.0 patrol is well known for this. My 2000 model did it at about 90,000 and it was the belt tensioner pulley thingo.

It's a bugger to get to. It is not a simple job!

There's quite a few tales about it if you want to do a search.

My buddy has a 2005 model with 100,000 and he's just been through the same thing.

I have pretty good results with spraying armour all on the belts.
Never had them slip or deteriate.
Lately Been using silicone spray hoping the noise stays away longer, not sure if it's longer but it does stop the belt from squeeking.

Dad use to use a bar of soap and run that in while the motor was running!
I wouldn't recomend that practice Ouch!!!

But don't use WD 40 or similar the solvents eat rubber, where as the above preserves it.

Hey Troo Bloo, maybe the idler pulley, cost about 60 bux and you need to remove the fan shroud and use a T50 star to get it off, unfortunatly you cant just buy the pulley alone you must purchase the belt tensioner with it as a unit, ZD30 should go through one every 60k-90k depending on your driving, i had the same problem... could "feel" a noise from the passenger side floorpan and about 10K later SNAP!! grrrrrr

The pulley bearings wear and cause the drive belt to slip on the pulley creating the noise.

Remove the belt and tap/shake the pulley, if there is any give in it then i'd be replacing it

Good luck and i hope this helps

Repco sell replacement pulleys for $80.00 which is a lot cheeper than paying $300+ for a complete unit from Nissan.

Have a look at www.patrol4x4.com/forum/ and find the GU Patrol referance document. It details how to replace the bearing in the tensioner.

I also replaced my belt with a non genuine one and found the squeal had started. In the end after trying different things i put a Nissan genuine belt back on and the squeal was not there anymore.Since then i have heard of other non genuine belts doing the same thing.
