Do they make a GPS (and if so what brand) where you enter the coordinates and it will direct to that point

Cobber
Any hand help GPS receiver has this capability, the function is called "Go To"
It will navigate you in a straight line to the coordinates that you have entered, or if you have multiple waypoints, will navigate as a route.

Cheers

Hi Cobber,
as Stephen said, all hand helds will do the job... BUT... some do it better than others for a number of reasons. The cheaper models don't have maps and or don't have the ability to load maps to the GPS. So it depends on what you want do with it. Suggest you get hold of a book called "GPS Vehicle Navigation in Australia" or another book (whose name escapes me at the moment) that describes the basics of GPS navigation and use (written by Aussies). It's available at BCF and other camping and book stores.

When you know what you will use the GPS for, then it will be easier to decide what GPS you need for the job. Also look at the GPS articles on this site.

I forgot to mention, no maps on this unit but it does have a small screen with arrow and trails and also breadcrumbtracking, school zones over speed alarm.. etc, Ebay is a great place to get all the info for comparison. The scope for what you want is big, it just depends on what you need.. Michael

Cobber

You still haven't clarified whether you want to see where you are on a map or not. Most GPS's have a function which lets you input your lat/long and then it will show you how far you are from that point and the direction you should head to head towards it. This would be very helpful say in fishing where you want to go back to a saved location you previously went to or a frined told you about and gave you the co-ordinates for that position.

However, if you are wanting to travel on roads and want to find how to get to a specific location, then mapping software will not only tell you how far you are from your location, but it will also tell you the quickest or shortest way via the roads to get there. Most mapping SW also tells you how long it will take you to get there by road as it stores info about what speed you should be able to do on those roads.

So back you, what is it you are trying to achieve with your GPS.

Cobber some excellent info has been given here, to simplify it:
You create a waypoint with the given properties (co-ordinates) and then ask the GPS to "go to" that waypoint. This also allows you to keep/save that waypoint for future use.

So for hikeing etc where there are no roads it will give you a straight line to the waypoint from where you are, if you are driving you will need road maps to navigate by.

Hi Cobber
Refer my top post. Enter the coordinates into any hand held GPS (not talking about in car street navigation units - not all will do this), go to waypoint page, highlight the desired waypoint and then press the "Go To" and it will direct you in a straight line to your required location.

Cheers

Not just hand helds will do this, also the Garmin Nuvi series has this feature, the Garmin GPS MAP 276C will too .

G'day cobber I have used a garmin map 175 for the last 10 years for that reason (before street navigators) you put in the coordinates, press go to & bingo an arrow points to where you need to go, also gives you closing distance & time with breadcrumbs

I have all sorts of GPS's and they all do it, heck even my Pocket PC App GPS Tuner does it and now with my Iphone I use an app called Motion X GPS which allows you to enter the co-ordinates easily, it has a rolling wheel with the degrees and minutes etc which makes it so easy, you can even just tap on the map and say go to rather than key the co-ordinates if you feel like it.

For anyone with an Iphone I can strongly recommend Motion X GPS 6.1 which is around $10 and it keeps all your tracks and you can even share them on facebook and twitter.!
