What are the legal requirements reference rear vision when the luggage compartment is loaded? Can storage drawers, luggage etc reach the roof thereby blocking rear vision through the rear window? Do the same rules apply as when towing a caravan etc?

As long as you can see through your side mirrors you would be OK.

Think of all the panel vans around, very few of them would be able to see out of an internal central mirror.

Rod, You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned towing a caravan. You are NOT required by law to be able to see out of your rear view mirror...

BUT......

(and this is a BIG BUT)......

You must have external rear view mirrors which allow you to see what is behind you.

In my case, I have a Patrol (converted to a dual cab) which has a large steel canopy with no windows. I rely on my side mirrors plus I have (for my own piece of mind) a rear view camera mounted right above the towbar. The screen for the camera sits in the place where the internal mirror used to be.... it was a total waste of space so was removed. If you have a vehicle which has a permanent load of drawers, fridge, and other permanent gear which makes the internal mirror virtually useless, then you may as well remove it too.

Just my opinion.... YMMV

As long as you have two external mirrors (ie. one each side!) you don't need to be able to see out the rear window.

Just have a look at EVERY goods carrying vehicle on the road and do what they do, that is use the side mirrors!

Most buses these days are rear engined and therefore have no rear window.

Side mirrors are marvelous if positioned correctly.

Even better with a dual lane part so you can see across lanes on both sides.

Hi Rod,

I saw a tradie the other day who had modified the "If you can't to see my mirrors I can't see you" to "If you can see my mirrors, show me your t@ts"

You don't have to be able to see through your internal rear view mirror in Qld but you must have external mirrors.
