Picked up a nail on the front wheel at a job site and 1/2 hr later heading north down the
hill towards the Mooney bridge on the F3 NSW (for those that know it) the thing all of a sudden totally deflated in a few meters.
What a bloody nightmare!, steep
hill, very narrow verge between guard rail and outside lane, The first problem, steep
hill all the weight was forward, luckily i had two jacks so i managed to get the thing up. The next thing!, probably the most frightening thing of all time was having my ar...e within 1/2 a mtr from cars and trucks doing 100ks/ hr while trying to get the wheel nuts off , Damn Defenders, the nuts bind up soooo tight!
Not to mention the fact it was dark, the wheel brace had gone walk about, the socket set was half empty, The B Doubles screaming past caused heart murmer, and a slight drizzle of rain made it one of the most scary encounters i've had in a while. Anyway such is life, but thats enough for this week!...lol.
Cheers Axle.

try doing that changing a truck tyre........even less room to move when the truck takes up 1/2 the lane.makes you wonder when the RTA will start making wider shoulders so all can be safe for break downs eh?

Not a nice situation to be in Axle...I have one of those 12 volt wrench take them wheel nuts off in no time. Just need to use your wheel brace to make sure they are tight enough when you put them back on.

You were lucky! There was a bloke hit by a truck on the F3 this week changing a tyre.
Have not heard if he survived, but was taken to hospital. The F3 (probably most freeways) are a bad place to have trouble.

Congratulations on still being alive. Scared out of your witts, I would bet.
People on freeways just keep rolling along, that is the purpose.
Not once in the designing process is there thought about breakdowns, let alone some poor pryke changing a tyre.
So how is the blood pressure ?......... very high I would presume.
Once again congratulations in making it.
Cheers

I am sorry but I would rather totally shred the tyre instead of stopping there. And yes, you do have to be careful driving on flat tyres but my life is worth more than a lousy tyre.
I also carry a meter long piece of steel pipe to get those stubborn wheel nuts undone.

I would prefer being hit while I am inside the car and driving along to a safe place at 80Km instead of outside doing zip and being hit by them.
Nope Poor answer. As an ex driver I cannot agree. What on earth are they doing 100Km on a dangerous
hill without being able to control their trucks.
They are supposed to be professionals. Are you also trying to say that they couldn't slow down. If so then they should not be driving. They are going too fast and driving dangerously. They can move over into the next lane and overtake if that's the case.

They Can control their trucks!!, providing some idiot is not struggling along with a front flat tyre in front of them, doing 20ks /hr in a 110 zone! as stated where i was there was no room on the shoulder, and if you knew this particular section of freeway , then maybe your answer might have not been so critical.
Cheers Axle.

One would be a fool to be doing 20KM on a freeway. I suggest you go and do a 4WD driving course and really get to know what your car can do if needed.
I also said 80Km. Are you defending those blokes who wouldn't give you the time of day and try not to hit you. Come on now. I also said they can move over and overtake. I certainly would.
I would also see the double flashing indicators/active
hazard lights, meaning you are in trouble and give you a bit of leeway. I would also notice the fact that all your brake lights are on since your left foot is just resting on the brake pedal to make sure.
As others have said. Drive on to a safe spot. Even if you stay in the narrow shoulder and only do 20Km and protect your precious tyre. Don't change it.
Why didn't you call the police and ask for a bit of assistance. They are also there to help and would be pleased to do so.
If there wasn't room to safely stop what on earth did you stop and get out of your car.
I am done with this.

Ok , i see this all to often - and have a real issue with this -- Maybe not in your case but in general.....
People need to be educated - here is my 2 cents worth .... when you get a flat Tire .... you are able to continue to drive on that tire/rim at slow speed to the NEXT emergency stop area .... you do not need to stop on the side of the freeway 1 inch away from traveling b-doubles - your car will still actually drive in a forwards direction at slow speed........
ALL fatalities that involve a tyre change are from people that do not LIMP to the next safest emergency stop bay ......
AAAH but my tire cost me $300 i don't want to damage it --- OOh my rim cost $500 i don't want to damage it .......... If this is the case then your family will be worried about the $5000 + expense this attitude will cost them.
Cars can be repaird -- tires/ rims replaced - You only get one go at it - USE THE EMERGENCY BAYS!!!!!

This comment reminds me of the brand new 4by4 that got taken by the tide after getting bogged in soft sand.
The driver, when asked why he had not reduced the pressure his tyres replied "......couldn't that have damaged them?"
$60,000 lost for the sake of $2,400, assuming that the tyres would have in fact suffered damage. Unlikely in such soft sand.

Mate I hear you every car and truck doing 100kph plus! and you get 3 foot of road before that bloody great ditch that can bury your car and never get the left hand
wheels out.
It's a bloody disgrace that F3 I travel it 8 times a week and hate it!!! the deaths I have seen on that road in the last ten years and that's just me actually seeing them in progress is mind blowing it's got to be over 20 I have seen.
I have thought about being in your situation and the best solution might be to head towards the middle and change the tyre in the grass between the carriageways. That way at least your off the verge but that ain't safe either! they still cross lanes I have had a truck on it's side heading towards me on the Orimbah
hill at 04:30 Am in the fog. You can still see the gauges in the road heading South.
Glad you made it out alive.
