My patrol has the winch hooked up to the main cranking/starting battery. From i was told by ARB this is the way to go. I have a swithch on the dash that puts the batteries in one line to draw power from both when winching or requiring starting of the 2nd battery.

It would be my suggestion also to hook it up to the main battery and I also run the motor whilst winching to ensure 1) I get full power to the winch and 2) I dont flatten the main battery.
I actually disconnect the red cable from the battery when I am not winching, this disables the control box 'just in case' :-)

I run from the 2nd battery which is normally always connected to the 1st via 35mm leads. (No isolator system) With 2 x 130 amp hour Trojans I rarely run out of power :-) If in the rare occurance I had to winch without the engine running I also have the option to open a high amperage isolating switch ensuring power in the main battery.
Cheers Craig...............

Run it from a Cranking battery with engine running
A Dual battery system, using *DEEP CYCLE Battery* is for low Amps discharge over a long period of time
whereby a Cranking battery is capable of HUGE discharge over a short period of time
Some winch manufacturers recommend about 3 or 4 minutes running on a winch continuously
so it won't overheat, and the Alternator will recharge the CRANKING battery in this rest time
