A few days ago we had a thread on Spelling (thread 70716) in which 'didiaust" posted a reference "According to research at Cambridge University ........" then went on to target me for pooh-poohing it. Mfewster also hopped in for a quick swing at me!
Well, I saw the "report" first in an email to my wife but I have found time to do an extensive search on the subject and I now agree that the Cambridge academics were not "twits" as I had described them. In fact they DO NOT EVEN EXIST. It seems that this was another con job hawked around by fools. There was no such study or report.
The attempts to con the public abound! TV advertising wallows in it promoting products with almost magical qualities which deserve donations of our hard-earned money and politicians have made an art form of it. It is sometimes described as Spin Doctoring but was once known as plain lying. Now we get it on ExplorOz!
Fair dinkum, give me a break. If ya wanna publish something with tongue in cheek at least put "LOL" at the end so that simple trusting souls such as me are not deluded. LOL

Hullo Allan,
first port of call to verify anything presented as "true" but could be an urban myth is Snopes.
www.snopes.com
Sorts out all those interminable emails we all get.

Yair thanks Bushy, snopes deals with this one and there are some other sites too. I just wish some people would put their brain in gear before letting out the clutch on the keyboard. Save me some time from reading rubbish when there is plenty of good stuff to read.
PS. Should I put "LOL"?

Allan
It seems the old saying is still true, in fact even more so today with the Internet being so INSTANT: "believe nothing you read and only 50% of what you see"
It simply amazes me how easily some folk willingly believe "anything" they read, without checking it out for themselves. Snopes is a good start to debunking so many "Urban Myths".
The Internet has spawned a whole new breed of people that just love spreading "untruths" because they are unwilling or too lazy to question these lies, & many more are just so willing to believe them.
The truth is not hard to ascertain, it just requires a little effort. LOL
JMHO, Colin.

Yep, have finally convinced Mrs to check Snopes before forwarding the latest and greatest most beaut or frightening item ever seen that one of her many 'friends' has sent her.
She is nowhere as sceptical as myself.
cheers
