Hi every one
Have just completed 4000 k round trip to
Innamincka /
Birdsville etc
What fuel consumption should I have expected from my Nissan Patrol with canopy, 2.5 tonne, with a 250 kg load, towing a 1000kg camper trailer.
In anticipation thanks
Daz

G'day Daz, I've just completed a 4000k trip tonight with a gu patrol 4.2 turbo diesel - non intercooled, and did a little experimentation over the last 2 weeks trip.....
towing a pop top van about 1800kg at different speeds;
100kmh - around 20 lts per 100k's
90kmh - around 18.5 lts per 100k's
100kmh with head wind - around 22 lts per 100k's (that hurt!)
thats with a service done before leaving on a motor thats just done 150,000ks.
When we had our camper we averaged 18lts per 100 at 90-95kmh.
I hope that is of some use to you.
cheers, Keith

Thanks for that. Keith (stumbly)
I was interested in what others achieved before I put my results in.
I seemed to be using a fir bit of fuel
We averaged 16.9 litres oer 100k over the trip which was 90 % towing
On the dirt & rough roads & tracks we were from 60 to 70 Ks per hour & on the black from 100 to 110 k per hour. Some of the tracks included a fair bit of changing gears etc.
When you are towing on the open road do you use 5th gear or leave her in fourth.??
Thanks Daz

Daz
Depending on your foot position, I would have to say about 6 to 6.5 km /lt.
In hard going, not that there is much, but that does include headwinds, I would say about 5 to 5.5 km/lt..and in dunes ect expect just over 4 km/lt
Our 4.2 TD Patrol gives that, and it don't seem to matter what or how I drive it, never over 7.8 km/lt. That includes freeway driving, and on the open road.
The real thing that irritates me is that I do not drive it hard, and have even dropped my speed to 95 km/hr.....
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...... then again I do not really care that much.
Cheers
Bucky

sorry for the late reply Daz, we stay in 4th when towing unless a long downhill.
we find that 5th makes the engine lag at that speed which is just as inefficient as belting the s...t out of it.
We try and stick to 90 - 95 kmh as anything over a 100kmh seems to just suck fuel.
16.9 per 100 ks @ 100kmh seems quite good to me - maybe its the intercooler I don't have? I would be very interested in others consumption as I seem to be using alot more than yourself!
